$20 budget oil choice.

I run mid 2000's port injected Toyota engines and mine do just fine on Toyota Genuine oil purchased from my local Toyota dealer. I always purchase online in bulk during the 25% off sales (one happens to be going on right now). TGMO 5w30 comes out to be about $2.90 per quart. About $3.08 for my oil filter (YZZN1).

An oil and filter change on my Corolla (1ZZ takes 4.4 quarts) costs me less than $16. I change the oil every 6 months.

Catch sales online from Walmart for good oil. 10k,20k All synthetic. Mobil 1 , Pennzoil, Quaker State. 5 qt jugs. Usually on sale for $ 24 bucks for 5qts. Then I take a bunch of $ 5 buck promo codes that I'd been hoarding on my computer, and add them to the sale. Comes out to like $ 18 bucks a jug. Free delivery. Now, how you gonna beat that. Didn't have to drive to Walmart or nothing. Came right to my doorstep.

Motor oil is motor oil I always say. The frequency of changing it makes all the difference. As long as it has that SAE embossed on it, it's good enough for me.

That’s what a lot of people used to think. But with a lot of engines having carbon buildup on the rings even with frequent changes, it’s pretty good evidence that the oil you choose can have a big impact on how clean your engine stays. With an oil that doesn’t keep things as clean it will begin to form deposits right away. So even if you changed it every 2000 miles you can still end up having a dirty engine

Didn’t you have oil consumption problems?

I seem to remember piston soaks and BG flushes….

Thank you for that info. I do run an EPR 109 every couple of OCI's. My cars don't see much use anymore. I'm retired, car sits there. Wife runs a 40 mile round trip commute to work. Daughter not driving yet. Soon though. She can't go far without a job for gas and insurance. I just hop scotch to pharmacies and doctors. Going to be starting physical therapy from back surgery, but that's only a few days a week. Take our daughter to CCD 1x a week during school year. When I was working, I was doing serious mileage. Used the car for field work and got 50 cents a mile. That's how I racked up the miles on the 13' CRV. So, the cars are pretty much out to pasture now. Yes, had oil consumption on the CRV @ 300k. EPR 109 took care of that. Did a lot of idling with that car to keep work computers powered up. Glad that's over with. Guys on my old job went thru cars like pairs of socks. It was insane. Then they give you $250 bucks a year maintenance check, lumped onto you're regular check. Came out to like $ 100 bucks after taxes.

Those are just inferior engines.

Even still, you could switch to Valvoline Restore and Protect at the first sign of -actual- problems and it will clean it all up within 2 years / 4 oil changes. Right?

Until then you are just burning money. Especially considering a) problems may never develop, and b) you may not even own the car anymore when/if they do.

Certainly an option. Inadvertently that’s what I did with my oil burner. Started burning at 60k miles. Started my clean up with Valvoline Restore and Protect at 110k when my Wally started stocking it. Given a choice I’d rather keep things clean from day one. Avoid carbon buildup on piston tops, cylinder scoring, maintain full compression, poisoning of cat. and 02 sensors, any varnish especially in vvt system, valve deposits etc.

Do you burn any oil?

I'd favor keeping it clean from the start like Glenda, but I think there's an argument to be made there for some: use Kirkland/ST on sale (Kirkland goes on sale twice a year ($54 for 20 quarts right now; $2.70/quart) and then keep Valvoline Restore and Protect as the bail out option if you start burning oil. Not probably what I would choose, but I think most (all?) agree now that engines don't really wear out these days from oil choice. However, they do get deposits that kill engines early. You do run the risk then that Valvoline Restore and Protect doesn't fix your problem, and you could end up being penny wise and pound foolish.

Because even Toyota is not immune from engines that like to burn oil. Less common than others, but Toyota has had their engine shortcomings too.
They’ve also had problems with sludge and varnish in the past. No one is immune like you said.

No problems here. 1ZZ (later year model with piston / ring / return hole updates), and a 2UZ (best V8 ever made).

Have no problems with oil burning on my 03' Solara and 06' Camry. 2AZ-FE engines. Just store bought synthetic oil with the SAE embossed on it. 128k and 120k.. Run EPR-109 every now and again to keep them clean. 3k oil changes. OEM filters. No problems with them.
