How long will an oil filter do its job?

The reason I'm asking is that I tried to change the oil filter on my '99 Intrepid, but it appears to be stuck, extremely difficult to come off. The cap thing,(I used 2 diff. kinds), just slips. I tried to wedge sand paper for grip, but no luck. I change my oil on the short side, so last oil was about 2,500 mi ago when stuck, now another 2500 mi. I'm using a 50-50 mix of Penn syn & dino. Car has a shade under 200K. The oil filter is a Pro-Line from Pep Boys. The only solution is to try another cap or to have it done outside. Any opinions? thanks.

Try poking a screwdriver through and turning it with that. The downside is once you rupture it you can't drive the car until you replace the filter. Or try the big pliers-type oil filter remover. 7500 miles should be no problem for any reputable filter to last.

Yep, going for a better tool is the likely solution. If you're really mean you can have your quick lube or mechanic change the oil.

Also, if no luck with the tool search, maybe around three self drilling metal screws through the ribbon of the filter wrench and into the filter might help with the grip. (admittedly, this could get messy)

Would WD-40 possibly be of any use here if it were sprayed into the area with the rubber gasket?

What don't the quick change places understand about the phrase "hand tighten". I get it as tight as I can with one or two hands. But they are only hands not wrenches.

Large Channel-Locks always work for me if you have the room. Have used a screwdriver once.

And of course make sure you are unscrewing it, not tightening it.

You should read this thread for some solutions.

If the Proline is spec'd Purolator 14670 equivalent you would need the larger of the Lisle Wide Range Filter Wrench(63250) available at Amazon. Best solution I've found.

Fyi, the smaller size (up to 3&1/8") is available at AutoZone by OEM tools for ~$6, but that won't help you here.

I had a Fram filter on a '89 Ranger that wouldn't come off by hand. I should have bought a strap-on wrench but opted to poke a screw driver through it. The thin metal just ripped off and I was stuck with the base plate still secured in place. I had to drop an engine mount and hammer & chisel the base plate for over an hour to remove it.

Lesson learned - Always use the right tool for the job.

Poking the filter with a screw driver would be my last resort, I've done it before, but you gotta have a back up plan because there is no turning back after the filter is punctured.

One thing is for sure, that filter will not be any easier to remove as time and miles pile up. I would try to get it off sooner rather than later.

the best answer so far!

I'm thinking about re-using my PureOne filter this oil change. I've had my GTX in for roughly 3 months, and 3,000 miles. I normally don't change this early but I have some QSUD that I am itchin' to try out, and I got like 16 quarts.

I probably will re-use the filter this time around and if need be, I will change it come spring or summer.

i don't understand why anyone uses the cap wrenches or straps. like others mentioned, get a set of oil filter pliers and you won't have this problem again.

In the old days, cars used to change the filter every other OC.
This was kinda standard.

If guys nowadays go 10-15K on full synth oil changes, I see no reason to expect a filter to last less than this.
Esp if you do an OC half way through.

Thanks so far folks. I tried the strap type band wrench, but the position the filter is in, that tool won't work. Seems like it is made to come off with a cap style, but I may get one of those jaw type tools. I may also think of getting another cap style brand from Wally M

Getting the filter good and hot by running the engine will help. A cold filter is really difficult to get off.

You could also try wrapping some duct-tape around the base of the filter to give you a little more traction when using the cap-wrench. Getting the car up on jack-stands to give you a little more room to work may help as well.

I use them because they've always worked well for me using a 3/8" ratchet. And apparently as the linked thread shows, the Lisle Wide Range Filter Wrench has worked well for many here with difficult or stuck filters.

To each their own.

+1 for the Lisle. I have a drawer full of old filter wrenches of different types and sizes that I no longer use. I bought two Lisle Wide Range's in import and domestic size ranges from Amazon and that is all I use now.

Hi Greaseball. Try to get hold of a removal tool like the one pictured here. I use this one for all my cars, fits various sizes and you don't need turning space for it to tighten itself on like the strap ones. This one you just tighten onto the filter with the knurled nut on the end, you can get a very firm grip and it's easy to use.

Check oiut harbor freight.com they have a cheap pair of oil filter pliers I think 2.99, that work pretty well. Ive used them pretty often and dont see to be falling apart. Although they dont do much work so they should last
