I would use the filter unless there was something obviously wrong from an inspection.
I've cut open fram filters that were NOS from the 60s 70s & 80s and I would say even at that age the only thing that would make them unusable might be a hard ADBV, everything else was in excellent condition. If you search around you might find the post of a guy cutting open a 90s fram on here after using for an oil change, and it was fine.I have a Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter that I purchased for my 04 Nissan Sentra back in 2015 as part of a oil change discounted bundle, but never used.
This had been sitting in the Nissan's trunk for years and then moved to my garage.
I have done oil changes since then, but used K&N filters. It's time for another oil and filter change, but question whether I should even consider this old filter, or just get a new one.
I could imagine that there could be potentially rust accumulation, brittle filter media or drain back valve. I don't think it is worth taking the chance over a 17.00 filter.
Opinions?
not right /Buy a new one exactly the Mobil 1 you have for a long time, then return the old Mobil 1 filter to the store.
That post gives me confidence to run the 2012-vintage Fram XG3593A I picked from the Walmart clearance shelf a few months ago.Fram Canada PH3980 C&P
It is with a touch of sadness that I give you a 90s Fram PH3980. Produced at the storied Stratford Ontario Plant which closed in 2012 Date Code F3178A (1993?) This is a much heavier filter than the current PH3980. Steel is thicker, media feels heavier. Run for approx 12,000Km in an 04 Chevy...bobistheoilguy.com
Yep that’s how people wind up with defective goods. It’s too bad people do that. If a person is say 10 years old they may not know any better. It’s like when something of ours is stolen, just steal someone else’s, why notnot right /
An OG Ultra that old if stored where it doesn't rust at all would be totally fine to use. I have some OG Ultras that are 5+ years old that I've stored sealed inside the house and they look great and will be used. That post gives me confidence to run the 2012-vintage Fram XG3593A I picked from the Walmart clearance shelf a few months ago.
Agree. I had a co-worker that would buy a TV at Best Buy and get the extended warranty, then bring back the tv a month or so before it expired. He would say the sound cuts in and out intermittently or something. He always got a new tv from them and it was the latest model. Scammer.Yep that’s how people wind up with defective goods. My buddy has a friend who actually always uses products like tires for 30-60 days, destroys them, and says he doesn’t like them and gets a new set. He likes it when a shop isn’t pleased. It’s like he’s making up for his inner unhappiness
No lie. I was once visiting my mom in CT and we were at our favorite store. Costco.Agree. BIL did this three years in a row of buying and returning a TV to COSTCO for the Super Bowl. After the third year return, they cancelled his COSTCO membership and any other user names associated on the account. No lie. I was once visiting my mom in CT and we were at our favorite store. Costco.
A maybe late 20’s kid was telling his dad to borrow a TV for the Super Bowl. His dad genuinely did not understand what he was referring to and the kid finally said buy the tv, watch the game, and return it. The dad said I can do that?
I will confess this much. Back in the day (2013) we bought 3 TVs. One in BJs. One in Costco. One at Best Buy. It was in fact due to Best Buy having the lowest price. We did not open the TVs from BJs and Costco,
BJs completely opened the sealed package and removed everything. Costco did not.
I didn’t like the situation but I also felt BJs ruined a brand new saleable TV. We didn’t gain anything other than getting the lowest price. A price match would have been the best case. It was 46” so not tiny and for 2013 a decent size.
