What's In Your Stash?

For the Tacoma, I've got a stash of 8 older WIX filters (the good ones), oversized model 51516. The spec'd WIX filter is model 51348.
For the 2 bikes, I have 2-3 filters for each, just standard paper units that get the job done. The bikes don't get a new filter every time because I change the oil alone more frequently. The Yamaha 450 has a surprisingly small capacity of 0.9 quart, which seems silly.

I just snagged four of these Purolator TL20195's for $2.45 a pop. My oil burning Camry is getting them for her 3-5k OCIs from now on. Just a jobber filter, and the boxes are little dinged up, but I do like the plastic cover sealing the opening and the nice big open holes in the tube instead of closed louves.

Good Morning Everyone,
Help me understand these stashes of oil filters. If OCIs are approximately 5,000 miles;
1. What are the benefits of stockpiling 10-20 oil filters? (versus buying them when needed)
2. How many miles are BITOG members driving in a year?

Thank you!

Why a stash?
1. I have five vehicles and they can all use the same oil. So I need a lot -- 50 quarts a year.
2. Four vehicles can use the same filter -- 8 filters a year.
3. I buy almost all of my oil on sale, as much as 50% off.
4. About half the filters I have were on sale also.
5. I never find myself needing to run out at the last minute and buy full price materials.
6. I never find myself searching or desperate for materials when there are shortages or supply chain issues.

No. Off topic.

:)

I can answer to the stash question a little bit...

I'm starting to buy filters ahead of time and a little bit of oil just for planning reasons and also they are cheaper to buy in bulk.

For example I service a lot of mowers, and just bought two cases of the different filters I will need for mowers. It was much cheaper per filter to buy them by the case, and less shipping issues than trying to buy them individually. I do maintenance on my family's cars and neighborhood/friends and family mowers, so often if I have that stuff on hand I can turn them around much quicker than waiting for shipping.

Current "stash":

12 x Kawasaki 49065-0721, 12 x Kawasaki 49065-0724 - these will fit 99% of the mowers I service

12 x Champ PH48XL - will fit my dad's 2020 Grand Cherokee 5.7L

12 x Champ PH2867XL - will fit the 3 Hondas in my family I service

12 x Fram TG16 - will fit the 2 Jeep 4.0L engines I service including my own and a friend who went halves on this box

3 x Fram TG9688 - will fit my Kubota tractor

All of these filters I will use, and they were much cheaper per filter to buy over individually.

1. Its probably my inner prepper instincts, stockpiling a known good product instead of the newer cheapened new gen ones, I like to stock on ammo and oil filters, they both fit in my 50cal ammo cans so why not? Also a natural hedge on inflation I guess too, only being the oil of worry to purchase moving on forward.

2. Over 20,000 miles per year currently per 5k oil change intervals on my daily driver. I used to average between 5,000-10,000 miles a few years ago. At these high annual mileages, filtration performance and productive maintenance is a primary concern to keep the vehicle in good shape.

I recently join this forum mainly my interest in oil filtration experiments using larger filters and finding a well vetted oil that cleans & runs clean in extended maintenance programs. Making more sense to stockpile on those Fram pink synthetic media filters based on those iso 4548-12 data listed here. Other than that I hope my personal projects and experience can add value to future discussions.

Good day.

Why the stash?…

I have something like 10 cars.
I bought most of them at a significant discount.
I do 1k OCIs on my classics because it takes 2 years to put on 1k.
Multiple vehicles use the same filter. My 1977 F250, 1979 Bronco, 1974 Mark IV, and 2004 Ram (sold) can use a FL1A. My Gremlin, 1963 Cadillac, and 1976 Cadillac use an M1-203.
It’s a good way to keep filters that have since been superseded by cheaper-built examples (Wix, Fram Ultra, etc.)

I have a bunch of filters and allot of them kinda just dropped into my lap.

I've got a stack of Microgard FL1a equivalent (can't remember the actual number) that my neighbor gave me. He used to buy oil at O'Rielly when they had oil and filter combo deals but he was using it mostly for OPE and topping off work vans so he built up a big surplus. I took the filter adapter off my 351W Ford OBS truck sho it takes the old style filter and now I'm trying to use them up.

I've got a couple of stashes of filters from people who got rid of the car they were used in. Mainly 3614 size or equivalent which cross references too a huge array of older cars.

The only ones I've been buying lately are FL802s equivalent.

Stock up on the good ones now, because as time goes on they will probably keep changing for the worse ... that seems to be the nature of the oil filter world. 😄
