Did Fram upgrade their oil filters as in metal ends caps maybe?

So about 2 weeks ago I was at Walmart and i took a look at their Fram PH7317 and compared it with their 6607 and the 7317 had louvers instead of the holes so I was confused, so I took my research to whip city wrencher on YT and looked up 7317 and the “new” ph7317 shows metal ends caps with a synthetic blend media this time. Is some other company now changing it to metal ends caps? I’m just more curious as I’m trying to save money and I change my oil every 3k and don’t wanna spend more money on a filter that I throw away every 3k miles with that being said I just wanted to know if anyone has opened a new filter and see that if maybe they are using metal end caps instead of their “paper” end caps!

How old is the Whip City video? Could have been a temporary supply chain production thing going on that resulted in some PH filters with metal end caps. The oil filter world is more chaotic and dramatic then a soap opera. 🙃 😄

I will say also his had an e-core so I was just really confused also because like I said the one in Walmart had louvers and I was just curious😁

That Whip City video was a year ago. Yeah, seen the end caps, center tube and ADBV go through temporary changes on and off ... so they may be having Champ Labs make some to keep up with demand is all I can surmise.

I haven’t seen the champ ph7317 at all. I’m sure the standard filters with the louvers still have the fiber end caps. Use them with confidence just don’t push them too long

Some PH orange can anecdotes seen with Champ Labs construction, meaning metal caps used. In my observation, FB changes can be willy nilly. Temporary probably. Confident fiber caps on EG/TG not going away any time soon, if ever.

Adding, change to a Fram PH orange can would have been easy, Take an AAP "Fram" Drive filter, slap an EG/PH sticker on it and add some Sure Grip and voila. As an aside, prefer the Champ baseplate design in the WCW vid.

Would not consider it an upgrade looking at the Ruffles files …
I’m stocked up for a while - but if buying I’d get TG out of the Fram selections - easily good for 5K-10K runs …
The ruffled leaf spring would work a lot better with fiber endcaps. I’ve never felt the fiber endcap hate, as long as there are enough pleats to prevent distortion (like the old PH16s were infamous for).

Topic thread before resurrection today, comes before the relatively recent spate of flashlight tests showing areas of oil bypass in the Champ Labs bypass piece seal areas. Yeah, opinions on them then would likely be different now. Adding, while many correctly point to the ripples in seal area as a factor, in my observation it's also the narrowing of that seal area on opposing sides too. A factor as seen in the pic from recent virgin FE7317 c&p. Together they contribute to the seal area light seen now.

Yes, that's a horrible example of a leaf spring stamping. Throw in that cut-off sealing ledge material between the ears you show here on top of a non-flat sealing surface + ripples on the sealing surface and it turns into the ultimate metal-to-metal sealing failure.

Too bad no one invented a felt caps element, nylon cage center tube, and a completely rubber combination adbv and bypass valve at the base end.

Combo ADBV/bypass valve was basically a fad that not many filters use. Functionality is questionable.

Just run a super tech filter or buy bulk jobber filters from rockauto.

Re: Post 13. Check out this leaf spring I saw on Whip City that as on a Purolator ONE. Side on the right is copped off (and minimum on left), no sealing going on there.
