household vacuum recommendations

14 months ago, we bought a Hoover Wind Tunnel Upright bag model off Amazon for lots less than the prices you named. I'm the one who has to do the vacuuming, & I've been very happy with it. I'll never have to clean the filters on the old heavy clunky GE bagless monstrosity again! Got the new vac, & a bunch of bags for it, for under $150 shipped. It's light, handy, easy to use, picks up well & bags are easy & *quick* to change. The bags hold a lot, too- can go several months between changes. You have dogs? Check out the name on this model.

I swear by the middle of the pack, kennmore canister vacs from Sears. Easy to change, micro-filtration bag, (I hate bagless vacs) and great power. Plus all the accessories you could ever want.

I have a dyson ball (hate it) an Oreck upright, (it's not great either) and a few others. Plus a big shop vac and a Lithium battery powered broom.

+1 on the kenmore canister vacs. They are made by panasonic in Kentucky and I've used one for 11 years now. HEPA bags, lots of attachments and still have tons of power.

I especially like it since we have mix of carpet and hardwood flooring. 1 dog and two cats, no problems.
 
I think lower price vacuum hat lasted 5-6 years is a better buy than expensive ones that lasted 10-15 years. Hoover Windtunnel is very good for a lot less than high end vacuum, but its sucking ability will degrade after 5-6 years, by then buy a new one.
 
I don't think we spend more than $60 on vacuums anymore.

We have the kids vacuum the carpet daily. The amount the cheap Dirt Devil picks up is amazing; I can't imagine any vacuum doing much better. Our two year old carpet still looks great. You might say "only two years"; but my kids put a beating to carpets..

Our dirt devil sucks. All the hair from the dog ends up on top of the vacuum instead of in the canister.
 
Depends on if you want it to last or throw it away for another disposable model a few years later. The Kirby's are very heavy but mine has a self propelled features that works very well. It does not however carry it up the stairs for you so that may be a consideration. They will last a very long time and do a great job of cleaning. Many attachments are available but are usually a bit of a pain to hook up and use. The carpet cleaner is a bit on the weak side but if you already have fairly clean carpet it will serve well. It is definitely not a deep cleaning replacement like a Rug Dr or other deep clean rental. Even the Bissel's will outperform in this aspect.

Kirby's also cost alot more than $250
 
We have two vacuums: A Bissell bought new for $44.@ Wally World 15 years ago for our basement and a midgrade Panasonic for the upstairs.
Both suck literally and figuratively. Next time, I will go to a dedicated vacuum store where one can actually try one out before they buy.

Has anyone used any of these vacuums? The vacuum has to be a BAG vacuum due to dust, cant stand how messy the canister is. Dysons are over rated for what you get and have to pay, plus they're all canisters.


We have a Dyson but we bought the large one to deal with dog hair (we have plenty of that) and it does a great job. A friend of ours bought a smaller one was unhappy with it's performance and so returned it. The message is to get the top of the range.
 
I use a bagless and bagged one, both hoover. I have a eureka also.

It does not matter which one you get, pls read and understand proper cleaning procedure.
This is important for bagless vacs, you need to clean them correctly and all the parts involved else your performance will degrade.

My aim is to get rid of all carpets in our home and put in under floor heat. Carpets are EVIL when it comes to dirt/dust/air quality.
 
I'm still using a Panasonic upright I bought 21 years ago. Great suction. Bags are cheap and readily available. I occasionally replace the belt as they stretch out over time, but that's it.

This has been completely debunked, it is false.

In a properly maintained home carpet actually captures and HOLDS junk that would otherwise be in the air. Then a good vac cleans the rug AND filters the air thoroughly at the same time!

FWIW we own several Dysons. Never bought a bag, filter, or belt, even in several years of Commercial service. Cheap on Overstock and highly recommended.

Yeah. I really don't understand the whole infatuation with hardwood floors. I personally hate them, alas, our house is pretty much all hardwood. Trying to keep it dust-free is a PITA, and like you said, if you don't clean the floors meticulously very often (like every few days), all that dust just gets reshuffled and floats around in the air.

I have a ton of beautiful pecky maple in my home, we love it. But it is a pain to keep it pretty. But I still have carpet in my Master suite as i love the quiet and the softness underfoot.

Of course i also know a decent carpet cleaner...

Before labeling carpets as "EVIL" sources of "dirt/dust/air quality" you ought to check your furnace, your duct work, plumbing & electrical penetrations in your stud cavities, attic & basement, holes in bathroom walls for plumbing, door sweeps and windows...and the fireplace vent.

If your furnace & air-cond. filters are black or dark grey, it's not your carpets fault. Your house leaks!
