Hot Dogs

Hebrew National dogs are great. I got tired of eating oscar mayer hot dogs with pieces of bone in them.

If you look back on my posts in this food forum, you can tell I do not have a cheap taste.

Sooo, My fav hotdog my come to a shock to some!

The BEST hotdog, and I drive about 20min some days to get one, are from city street vendors!!!

They use the cheapest, no name hot dogs, and they sit in hot water for the whole day!!!

I know, it's nasty. But it taste just so good! A little mustard and onion and I am livin the high life!!!

I'm with you there. Some of the tastiest ones I can think of come off the rollers at the corner store. I know it's a [censored] shoot, but I've never gotten sick. I eat the boudin from the ones who serve it, too.

Every time I get down to Columbia,S.C., I get a couple of dogs at Rush's, an independent group of about 5 or 6 restaurants. They serve them that way...chili/mustard/onions...great!! Any place that used a bun steamer gets my vote too.

Once in a while I buy un-cured beef franks, without carcinogenic sodium nitrites.

Hot dogs and other processed meats are one of the worst junk foods in my opinion. I loved them as a kid but one of the 1st things I learned about health foods over 25 years ago was to avoid processed meats, and I have. Most all of them contain carcinogenic sodium nitrite : bacon, balogna, salami, liverwurst, hot dogs.

Sodium nitrite is NOT considered a carcinogen. That's just part of the huge amount of disinformation disseminated by the "health" food industry trying to influence people to buy "natural" & "organic" higher-priced foods.

Sodium nitrite MAY be converted to carcinogenic nitrosamines under certain conditions, including extremely high temperature. Food processors have effectively limited this possiblity with the addition of erythorbates and ascorbates which almost totally block the undesired chemical reaction.

Hot dogs and most other specialty meat products can safely be consumed as a small part of a well-rounded healthy diet without undue concern. Eating them every day, day in and day out, would obviously not be in your best interest, mostly due to fat content. Moderation is the key.

Even if I believed nitrites to be safe, which I don't, there'd still be the factory farmed, mass produced, animal cruel, processed meats issue. I stopped eating processed meats decades ago. I don't think I could make myself enjoy a Nathan's frank (or a Big Mac) with all I've learned about how they're produced. I did when I was a kid but I was quite uninformed then.

My Dad died of cancer at age 58, and he was a big processed meat eater : hot dogs, liverwurst, etc.) and my Ma died of cancer also, so I don't think it would be in my best interest to push my luck by eating what many people say are known carcinogens.

As a rule, I eat only whole foods, whole meats, and naturally raised w/o hormones, """""".

Cheapest pack Walmart has on the shelf. Boil'em in water, cut'em up, and mix them in with a pot of KD.

That's dinner about once a month for the wife and I. It's a cheap, filling change!

Kraft Mac and Cheese. ie "Kraft Dinner". Poison in a box basically. Might as well add some nitrates to it in hot dogs!

That sounds mighty tasty. Crack a beer, prinkle on a dash of MSG and you're all set. After a meal like that I'd probably need to smoke a cigarette or two. Unfiltered, of course.

LOL!

I have a lot of good memories of eating hot dogs. My Dad and I used to go ice fishing on frozen lakes in New Hampshire and we'd start a fire and roast hot dogs, then have them with mustard, ketchup on them, with hot thermos coffee. I think they were the best tasting ones I'd ever had.

Used to get nice steamed dogs at Claremont (NH) Speedway back when it was a dirt track in the 60s. I think they were $.35 each then. I used to love ketchup and onions on them.

I guess they are OK once in a while but I'm kind of a chicken when it comes to food like that so I no longer eat them.

My parents used to feed our family hot dogs at least once a week. Ma cooked something with potatoes, onions, and hot dogs that was really good, and I think it had salt pork in it too.

My favorite (and they happen to be made here in Milwaukee) are Usinger's natural casing hot dogs. There are others that are similar but these are the best.

Edit: Oops, _excuse_ me, *frankfurters*, not hot dogs...
