Hit a deer

I have hit two deer and had one near-miss since I moved to MI in 2003. The first deer that I hit, I only saw a brown blur pass right in front of me, and I clipped him in the hip with just the corner of my bumper. The second deer that I hit was on I94, and I saw two of them standing in the median. I swear that one of them looked me square in the eye, then bounded right in front of me. I jammed on the brakes at 75 mph, and once again just clipped him with the corner of my bumper. It broke a headlight and ruined the front air dam.

I scan the sides of the roads now, and after dark I look for floating yellow orbs 3-5 feet off the ground. Those are deer's eyes, and I actually have spotted a few deer contemplating nocturnal suicide that way.

And had you been a tenth faster he would have missed you!

Where I grew up in NW Pa the question wasn't if you'd hit a deer, it was how bad would the damage be this time... especially this time of year.. they got love on their minds.

I'm here to tell you- it's not love that's on their minds!

Not sure how things are in Iowa but in Pa the rut starts generally late October and lasts into December.

Could have been a terrorist suicide buck...

Nearly missed a deer on I94 at night because of the eyes....scared the heck out of me.

In our state if you hit a deer with your vehicle and kill it the local Police and/or Wardens can issue you a tag to take it home so it doesn't go to waste. You just have to report it and get the permit to be legal.

I had a friend in IL who listened to police radio. When a hit deer was called in, he would call to claim the deer and take it home, clean it and he got some really good Bambe meat. He made Jerky out of some and it was so good on those cold mornings, when fishing for spring COHO salmon on the Chicago lake front in 35 degree weather. Ed

Exactly, have the responding LEO give you a salvage tag and take it to be or process it and enjoy!

A vast majority of the red meat my family and I eat in a year is venison. It's lower in fat, cholesterol and better tasting than any commercially available beef and hunting them helps population control so fewer of them end up as roadkill.

I hate deer. My friend hit one with his Jeep about a year ago. He is in a wheelchair and uses hand controls to drive. He pulled over and since it takes a few minutes for him to get out, and it was dark, he called his dad. He was only a few miles from home. The deer was laying motionless in the road. A few minutes later the deer made a noise, jumped up, ran directly into a street sign, then straight into the woods.
