Oh BOTIG...

My wife and I left yesterday to Colorado around 1:30AM from the Chicago burbs. We were going to be staying for 5 nights/6 days. About 4 hours in, a suicidal deer cut our trip short. It jumped out
from the oncoming lanes and I hit it going 70mph on I80 in Iowa. I wasn't tired and was paying very close attention to the road for that very reason, but wow do they just come out of nowhere and fast. The deer split into two pieces, with his lower half going down the side of my car and the upper half going across the windshield.

My wife was sleeping, so she was terrified to wake up to that. We were both 100% OK though. Despite the damage, the car was driving fine, not leaking any fluids, and the hood was latching fully. I wasn't going to take it to Colorado for any mountain driving, but I was able to drive it the 4 hours home instead of towing it. I was certain I'd get pulled over but nope, passed at least 6 state troopers and none seemed bothered. If I had been smart and put towing and rental on my insurance policy, I could have gotten it towed and hopped into a rental car to finish the trip at no cost to us. Don't have either :-/ although I may be changing that.

At the end of the day, I'm just glad my wife and I are both walking away from this unscathed. The trip and the car are not important. The Rav4 took the hit very well at that speed and the deer could have easily gone through the windshield. The airbags did not go off, probably because my car kept its speed pretty well after the hit. I didn't lose control at all either. I think a stabilizer bar got knocked loose because there was some bad suspension noise on dips and bumps going home. The shop is guessing close to 6k in damage. It is only worth 10K, so I'm guessing if it nears 7-8K they may consider totaling it, which would be a shame because its a solid car.

Glad you're okay. Shocked there's so little "stuff" behind the headlight.

Wow, glad you and the wife are ok! That's the important thing. Damage looks pretty similar to when my dad hit a deer going 70 mph on the Ohio Turnpike a few years ago in his 2007 Camry. Exact same spot as well. The front fender crunched up but the hood and drivers door were fine. Headlight replaced along with bumper cover, airbags never went off. Damage was about $3500 iirc by the dealer's newer state of the art body shop.

You're lucky, I'm glad no one was hurt. A little more toward the center would have triggered the airbags, in many cases that totals the vehicle. My guess is you might be right at the limit of where they total it anyway.

Those suicidal deer are so quick, no way to miss them. We have the same with wild hogs, they are low and thick, do a lot of damage. Glad you all are ok! Will you try to make the trip again? Shame to miss a nice Colorado holiday trip.

I agree, we are truly lucky. We should know by Monday or Tuesday if it's totaled.

Yes, but we may fly out and rent a car, even though I always prefer to drive. I wonder what the odds of hitting one are, as we drove to New Orleans from Chicago in January and never saw a single one. We are both bummed to miss out on the much anticipated mountain hiking.

There are plenty of deer anywhere there is cover along the highway, and in the fall you can see them in the open. You have to look, though, or you won't see them. It's easier at night when you will see the eyes reflect your headlights, typically they will be standing just inside the forrest canopy, a few feet in. Then you can see them (confirm it's a deer) but again you have to be looking. If not, you will miss the reflection.

I've only hit deer once, got schooled by a doe that came across from the left and I was able to swerve / miss, but there was another following on the same path and I didn't see her until it was too late and I clipped her with my passenger side of the truck. Damage to the fender but nothing like the photo in this thread, just a crinkle.

The bigger problem around here is moose. You don't hit them often and survive, they are tall and end up in the passenger compartment, 1000+ pounds of it. Not pretty. I even saw a cabover tractor that hit one in BC and the driver died. Very rare for a semi operator to be injured at all in a collision, unless his load comes from behind.

I had a buddy who hit a doe with his Big Twin, bent the front forks (FL) severely but he was OK.

That sucks man. Those deer really do just appear and there is nothing you can do about it. Ive only hit one deer and it was my my old ford van. I was doing 55 mph and I had a split second to react. I hit him square and he actually went flying like a bouncy ball tumbling through the air. I will never forget that. It was crazy. This was at night in the middle of nowhere and I was following some friends to a camp site. The deer knocked out my trans cooler so I was stuck. I left the car over night and the next day I was able to get it back on the road with some hose and clamps and transmission fluid I got from a general store. The general store owner was most likely a pathological liar. Telling me about hitting a million miles in a volvo and volvo giving him a new car. He also said he invented the tornado fuel saving device. At least he was nice enough to give me a piece of hose to bypass my trans cooler.

I feel sorry for you. We've got some of the nation's largest bucks in my area (Kansas), and I've probably hit 12-15 or more in the last 20 years. Several of them totaled out the vehicle I was driving. Here's the irony of it: If you shoot a deer out of season, the state owns the deer and you will be fully prosecuted. If you hit one with your vehicle, the state has nothing to do with the deer and it's your responsibility.
Glad you're okay. Several years ago near me, an over-the-road trucker hit one that had jumped up and went through his windshield. I think they finally took down the cross that was along side of the road where it happened.

You're blessed no one was hurt.

I know a guy who's paralyzed from the neck down. 1988 Honda CRX - the little wedge shaped ones.
Deer slid up the hood, went through the windshield, and almost took his head off....

Insurance totaled my mint OBS ford memorial day on a trip up north.
It hit the cab and at the worst spot, the corner.
I am waiting for a appraisal and I will go from there.
I have owned it a decade and will probably repair and/or replace parts(skins).

I was side swiped by one last nov otw home from visiting my gma at 11pm at night. I was doing about 45mph and all the sudden my mom screams in the seat next to me and something hit the side of my car. I pull over and get out and see the deer laying in the road. I call the police and he gets up and limps across 4 lanes of traffic behind ntb. You could tell he broke one of his legs. From the LR wheel well back the doors were damaged and scratched. The total fix was like $1,800 i just paid my $500. They ended up painting the whole drivers side of the car.

Good way of transmitting damage back into the structure of the truck.
Won't do a thing to lessen the impact forces of hitting a large animal.
Might just direct the poor thing up and over and through the windshield.
Vehicles are designed to lessen the fatality rate for both people or animals hit as well as vehicle occupants.
Adding things to the front of the vehicle defeats the engineered-in impact safety.

$3968 for the total estimate, although they will find more throughout the repairs I'm sure. Replacing front bumper and left fender and repairing hood and front door, new headlamp assembly, grill assembly, and a whole bunch of blending.

I should also mention the wife and I took my 91 Camry up to St Joseph, Michigan for a nice alternative relaxation trip. It certainly wasn't Colorado, but I don't want to push my old Camry too hard. I had never been, and it was an absolutely beautiful place to go. We just got back today.
