Deer ran into wife's Elantra :(

One reason I like having my 99 SL2 is my parents live in deer country. This time of year I see a lot of dead deer and other animals when I visit them.

Thanks for the report on the Altima. I am going to rent a car during Thanksgiving and I will cross that off my list of car choices.

Yes, Nissan quality is up in recent years.

Glad your wife is OK. I am interested in the Elantra when I wear out my Saturn. Nice to hear some good things about it.

I have a friend who used to live in Trufant, MI - he drove to work at 4:30 am and hit 13 deer during his 5 year tenure there. the body shop loved him. insurance company hated him. the Altima gauges looked pretty cool. the console and seats look really cheap!!! almost base model "GM like" (from the 80's) I had an altima. it had 3 defects the first year: coolant leak, brakes, CEL. it was an "ok" car but there were better cars for the same coin. never impressed by the sentras. love the Maxima! I would also try a Versa.

I drove a 2008 Altima coupe, 3.5SE, 6MT... I loved that car, with all my heart. Everything about it. Shame the feel of the '09 sucks for you, everyone's different. FWIW, drove a 2008 Elantra rental car 2 months ago, Enjoyed it for the most part, and then I got out and looked at it. That's the only part that sucked.

Glad the car and the wife are ok (going to be ok, car)

I had to read your sentence twice because my mind was thinking of something other than "deer really suck".
This time of year the deer have only one thought on their mind. That's why they couldn't care less about traffic. Or just about any thing else either.
About a year ago, my wife hit two of them in a one week time frame. The second one was with a rental car that she was driving while the original vehicle was getting fixed. She turned the rental in about 30 minutes after the police had finished up their report. Driveable, but was oozing fluids. Luckily, that one was on the insurance of the rental company.

They can make for some "Kodak" moments type stuff. When I construct Gary's World, there will be 10 acres of apple orchard to keep a sensible herd interested in sticking around.

Bambi! It's what's for dinner!

We were driving through an upscale development getting to my daughter's place. We saw a deer on the lawn and thought for a moment that someone bought a deer statue to give that "natural" feel to things. Then it moved ..right there on the front lawn like it was an ornament.

Gotcha; The 2008 ones have a bubbly shape that I also hate. I much prefer the previous look, which we have; looks much more serious and refined, IMO.

here are the pics of the damages to Elantra:
you can see some fur on one of the pics :) - but like i mentioned before, the deer just ran off unharmed.

you can see the cool thread pattern of the General Altimax HP in this one a bit (GREAT tire, btw)

Interesting door dent. Wonder how the side impact bar fits in there.

I suspect the deer didn't make it. They're programmed to take off when trouble hits... hence the term, "high tail".

The cops (wife had pulled over and called cops to report the accident) looked around a lot, wife said, and they didn't see any deer lying around anywhere. Wife said she saw it (caught a glimpse) run away into the woods....

not if they are racing.......lol

Yeah, that deer didn't make it. Good thing your wife had such good luck.

Deer are funny. They can take a high caliber round straight to the vitals and run a good 30 yards before falling. I had one do that to me just this past Sunday. Absolutely no right shoulder blade and an exploded heart but he still could move like nothing was wrong for twenty or thirty yards. I expect you'll see buzzards near where the accident happened in the next couple of days if the hogs haven't devoured the carcass.

Well, I think it's better that this is nature's way of saying that there are too many deer instead of nature's way of saying that there are too many humans.

I don't know, but you might have an overpopulation of deer in some areas of NC. I know here in Texas they got way overblown in some counties and genetic defects and malnutrition started cropping up in the population. Better management by the parks and wildlife department has improved it somewhat, but bag limits for hunters remain increased in many places to control populations. Nobody wants to 'kill bambi' or whatever, but the alternative is thousands of defective, starving deer.

here in michigan there are over 60,000 car deer crashes a year,(per MI state police) and that is just what is reported to the police, a lot of semis just keep on truckin after a hit and they dont even get counted.
In our upper penninsula a bad winter means tens of thousands of lost deer due to starvation.

They needed a good culling for decades in Valley Forge National Park. The population is extreme. Just off the Main Line some of the larger estates had such a large head count and it was littering the roads with busted cars and people, but the owners would not allow hunting on their property.
