I was talking to an old best friend that I don't see nearly often enough anymore.....he sent me this picture of his 2013 GMC Sierra when he crawled under to oil spray it with Krown this week.....

He had a 2006 GMC Sierra before but was talked into buying his father in law's truck when he got a new one. He had it sprayed at krown every year. My friend did it himself to save money.

I got a little nervous after seeing his so I crawled under my 05 Silverado and looked in the exact same spot. Frame is different as it's a C channel where it's boxed in where his rusted out. I'm guessing it was full of debris and didn't get cleaned out enough.

Mine looks like it was pushed through the inside of a grease gun in the same area.

Krown service is like anything else. You have to self advocate in your own best interest. I work with my Krown dealer to make sure I get it done to my satisfaction. I cannot expect a low paid laborer to be passionate about doing a lowly task day in and day out. I have the luxury of choosing what I want to do myself vs. paying someone else. I have difficulty comprehending how so many people live without being in touch with the elements required to survive. Sigh, I digress.

This is all the manufactures fault and problem. We have steel ships that live in salt water. It takes very little brain cells the figure out how not to have the products you make not rust out. I could do it, how come GM can't with all those over paid employees?

Planned obsolescence, plain & simple. GM (& the others) have ZERO interest in making things last any longer than they have to!

Very true. And we consumers prioritize other frivolities over reliability and and long life. That's why today's owner's manuals have much more space devoted to the infotainment operation vs. vehicle maintenance.

Do you have any idea how much maintenance ships take?

Wonder how much OEM rust prevention in vehicles costs people in other areas who don’t need it (like here in the SW?)

Growing up in NW Pa and then living in Arizona for 20 years and seeing both sides of rust I’m not sure why it’s the car makers responsibility that governments use salt and destroy cars.

Yes, we used to send customers to Krown at the Goodyear shop I worked at. Then we started seeing them only half sprayed underneath and we'd send them back to get it resprayed. It's more about the person spraying then the product.

It is a real mess to spray and not fun without a hoist. I'd rather have someone else that is trustworthy spray it but it's difficult to schedule downtime for maintenance. The truck works Monday to Friday with me and I do regular maintenance on the weekends at home.

No, it was lack of maintenance to the frame. Any vehicle in this climate will rust out after 10 years of no maintenance.

GM is stellar compared to Toyota 4Runners. We have a 2001 and every Gen 3 we looked at had frame repairs. Ours absorbed $2,000 of work.

This truck hasn't seen Krown in many years.

Respectfully, that is only one picture. One thing I do know is that it was driven to Krown every year for undercoating. Knowing our local krown there is a good chance they missed half of the undercarriage.
One thing about krown is if you spray it at an already corroded area...it can looked soaked until you drive it for a day and it gets rinsed and dries off. Then it's back to looking like bare rusty steel.
I did multiple touch ups a year on mine.
