Help me decide on oil and intervals.

Car is a 2001 honda civic 1.7 sohc. 5speed man. Car has 162,000 miles no leaks,or consumption issues. Car has been run on reg dino all its life ccording to previouse owner. Summer is 90 degrees plus. Winter gets down to 0 sometimes. Looking for your recommendations. Different for each season? Not sure on this one. Thanks for any input you may have! Car is driven 10 miles daily to work,very little expressway use.

What OCI have you been using to get you to 162k with no consumption/leaks ?
I'd say stick to that, it's worked good so far.

Car is new to me. Done nothing so far. Timibg belt was done 115,000 miles. Wondering if i should go for a high mileage oil but with no leaks not sure? Would something like quackerstate green bottle 5w20 for summer and quackerstate ultimate for winter?

As a general rule of thumb, I would, and I do, go by the car manufacturers recommendation.
On my current car, the Kia Soul, they've even printed the correct oil weight right on the oil filler cap. That takes a lot of the guesswork out of deciding what weight oil to use.
If the car is used to conventional oil, stay with that.

Quaker State Defy 5w30 and Wix/Napa Gold filter. Change every 5k.

No need to worry about winter/summer fills. You are neither cold enough nor hot enough to worry about it.

Pick an oil and any reasonable oci and you will be fine.

If it were mine, id be using trop artic every 5k miles, unless I found some compelling reason not to.

Honda's factory OCI was 10k (and only changing the filter evey *other* OCI)

Use the synthetic of your choice and a Wix/Napa Gold filter. Napa has PP on sale this month $4.99/qt, plus a $2/qt rebate.

Honda has back spec'd 0w20 for this car. I would run whatever 0w20 full synthetic is on sale @ 6K intervals since you're doing daily short trips so the oil will never get up to temp.

Any 5W20 SN rated- brand name oil at 5K OCI - should serve you well.
Personally I'd use Havoline or Pennzoil conventional.

I'd be rather creful about back specs, as they are only done for fuel economy reasons, not engine wear, BUT as this car is not leaking any oil it should be OK for a full synthetic.
If it's doing 2 OCI's per year, then an 0w20 in winter and an 0 or 5w30 in summer. If it needs an all season oil, then an 0w30.

5K oil only changes, with 10K oil & filter changes would make sense in nice round number terms.

There is no difference in operating temp viscosity between a 0w20 & 5w20, therefore there is no difference in engine wear assuming both oils use the same AW additive pack. If anything, using a 0w20 for this application will DECREASE wear because of the daily cold starts and short trips where 0w20 offers more protection than 5w20.

The only reason Honda recommended 5w20 when older cars came out of the factory is because 0w20 wasn't widely available at the time. Toyota did the same thing and has back spec'd 5w20 & 0w20 for over a dozen cars across multiple model years, all of which came with 5w30 from the factory.

Run on dino all its life? I'd stay with whatever weight it started with.A 0w20 will not save you enough fuel by using it,but it might perhaps leak or find a place to leak as they are gonna have higher detergency in them and may clean to the point of having a leak. Just run the 5w20 or 5w30 in a quality filter and oil and change every 5k.

A major semi-syn like Motorcraft or Pennzoil Gold....5w20....with an OCI of 7500 or one year....and a Fram TG filter.

Oil can be used year round (keep it simple).

Wow usually the 1.7 uses oil.. We did hundreds of those 1.7 engines up until 2002 they had issues. In 2003 they were ok .Some of The newer ones had their problems also..

Almost any name brand oil that meets the specs along with a NAPA Gold filter. Change at 5k.

Your on the border line for getting the engine and exhaust hot enough to burn off water and fuel in the oil and water in the exhaust.

I'd use what has been used. Filter and oil. I'd change filter and oil at 5k for the same reason Donald, previous post, said.

If you can't find out what had been used, I'd stick with Dino and Honda filter. I'd use a 5w30 of any major brand. If you have gone 160k miles with no consumption in and engine that normally consumes oil you have a lot of reasons to stick with what has gotten you that far.

By the way, I'd love to know what oil and filters the previous owner used.
