With castrol Gtx and an STP filter how long can I go without having to change oil again? Is that a good combo? And what are the arguments for when you should change oil(Age vs. milege). Thanks a lot guys.

LOL! Are you thinking that GTX + STP filter would be the magic combo that would outlasts many other combo in your oil change? Think again.

Regardless of what your driving style, your engine operational conditions, tuneups, ambient temperature, moisture level, gasoline quality, etc. (and the list goes on and on), your motor oil shall become contaminated in several thousands of miles. Changing oil filter could only rid of large insoluables in the motor but cannot rid of moisture, gasoline, etc. trapped in the oil. Worse yet: as additives wear out, your insoluable level increases dramatically.

IMHO regardless of "magic combo", you shall always stick to a sound OCI (I would say 5~7k miles)

Why don't you tell us what you are driving, how many miles on the engine, how it runs, how many miles you drive, etc..so we may advise you.

In a perfectly running vehicle with no issues to speak of, I would be comfortable using the GTX and the STP for a maximum of 5000-6000 miles, or 5-6 months. If you don't do really short trips often. With short trips, I would say every 3000-4000 miles, or every 3-4 months.

It's a pretty good oil, and an OK filter.

Actually for the price, in my area Chevron Supreme is about $1.09 a quart with coupon, and that's about as good or better then Castrol GTX.

As far as the filter goes, depends on whether you want to make a seperate trip, or buy the oil and filter at the same place. Walmart Supertech filters are as good as STP IMHO, and they are only $2. But if you are not already going to walmart, it's not worth a special trip. Plus walmart sucks, so there is that issue as well.

Now if you were going to walmart, get the Walmart Supertech Synthetic in 5 quart jug for $13, and the Walmart filter for $2.

If you prefer dino, I reomend the chevron. I know you asked about castrol not chevron, but I just wanted to mention it.

I think Castrol is good; we are running the Castrol GTX in our 2001 Taurus. But I'm gonna go buy a 12 pack/case of chevron soon. Probably go with the wally filters or puralator. We have the motorcraft filter on there now, but I have to either buy them online or at ford dealership.

Hey thx for the answers. I have an 03 mitsubishi lancer with 49,000 miles on it. It runs pretty good. I do idle a bit high though. Other than that it's good. I didn't think stp and castrol would be a "magic combo" it just seems like a cheap way to go. So you think I can get the Chevron stuff cheaper? Is the wal-mart synthetic any good. Is it better than the gtx and chevron? At walmart when I went they didn't have any filters for my car. all they had were fram and from what I heard they suck. Puraltor is probably cheaper.

What if I did walmart supertech filter with chevron supreme?

Your engine would never know the difference.

Use either and you'll be fine. Switch between them, go with what's cheaper, whatever. Don't stress on the decision, as long as you stick to a reasonable OCI, your engine will last plenty long.

so a 4k oci with chevron supreme and walmart supertech is a good enough decision? I basically just want to know if that's a lot better than say shelf oil and fram. I don't want any cheap stuff but I don't want anything overly expensive. Just want to know if that's a good quality combo.

As to the original question, how about abiding by the owner's manual as a start?

If not, then 5,000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first is a pretty safe oil change regimen.

so on this website http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html supertech is the same as the stp and champion filters? thanks

Champion Labs (no relationship to Champion Spark Plug Co.) uses a basic mechanical design, but filtration media and "can" metal gauge vary per customer. I don't think I'd equate a SuperTech filter with an STP filter. But I have used, and do still use on occasion, SuperTech oil filters on my Hyundai V6 and in the past on a Honda I4. Never had a problem with them - they're an honest filter at an honest price. I'll wager that if Fram made an oil filter with the same attention to materials and detail that Champion Labs lavishes on SuperTechs, that mythical Fram would sell for twice what SuperTechs sell for.

so it's just a bargain filter. Autozone has this coupon for 5 quarts of valvonline and a free stp filter. Would you guys recommend that? They also have another one for 1 dollar off castrol gtx but that doesn't seem like a real good deal.
