Went to Mazda dealer today to get the CEL checked out on my 3.
Got a call later from the tech who serviced the car saying it was the Purge Control Valve & it was taken care of under warranty. He also said he'd replaced a burnt out brake light bulb & did a TSB & did an oil change for me with Castrol GTX free of charge. Just close my eyes & give him all 10 on the Mazda survey.

I had just changed my own oil this past weekend with PP - 5 days ago.

Did you not have a sticker on your window showing the mileage of your next oil change? If there was nothing there then I cant really blame the guy for trying to be nice.

If he would have pulled the dipstick before he should have been able to tell the oil was just changed...

I don't know that (any) many DIY car owners that would do this. Besides, I think my story is more like ironic than anything else.

Other than the bonehead dealer, how do you like your 3?

Luv it. Solid & quick.
If you live in warmer climes & mpg is not important, then I would get the Speed3.
Otherwise the regular 3 is more than fun.

I'd go back and get my $25 for the PP and filter they wasted.

This throws off my tire rotation & OC cycle also if i decide to change - what I think is GTX - out @ 3k. Of course this would break my dino rec for 5K OCI.

Being a jerk about someone trying to do a good deed isn't too wise. There are many more warranty miles left on the car and being obnoxious about some oil will not help down the road. I've seen dealers fix items for courteous customers that were not even covered under warranty. Being nice may very well pay for the lost oil many times over if you plan on keeping the car for a long time.

In my office, we call that Dealer Interference. Any time a dealer tells the customer how to fill out a survey (especially if there is an incentive involved), it gets reported back to the client. At the client's discretion, these dealers are tracked and the worst offenders could have sanctions imposed on them. The dealer principal could even lose his franchise...it has happened.

We all talk on here about DIY OC & being careful & detailed oriented vs. dealer's lack of attention.

There lies the dilemma for me: how do I know if the drain plug was tighten properly or my filter housing wasn't cracked.

If I do have warranty issue related to the above & tell the dealership, they have no record of ever doing the job because the tech did the good deed - off the books. All i have was is his word vs. mine's & the little o/c sticker up in the corner of the windshield.

Again No good deed goes unpunished I guess.

Did i say go back, show your behind, and burn a bridge? No. I said I would go back and get my money back. Sure, there are bigger battles, and the OP decided to let it go which is probably the right course of action. My point was that NO work needs to be done unless it is requested or FOUND to be defective/broken.
