I did my yearly oil change on my sons vehicle [3500 miles] and upon removing the oil filter an XG8A the element was loose it rattled when I shook it . It didn't rattle when I installed the filter. I called Fram and the claims department didn't answer and then I emailed about the problem with their premium filter. There of coarse was no damage but when you buy the premium filter I don't expect it to rattle. We will see what Fram does.

If you send it back, they'll just say there was nothing wrong with it. Cut it!

Do not cut it--reach out to Motorking and he will take care of you. On the surface it sounds like the leaf spring slipped loose and is rattling.

I have a real spring you can use from a recently cut open Wix and Hastings. The Hastings is beefy.

This,
Let motorking cut it open in the Fram lab, then he can share the pics with us......

I want to get another filter from fram. It caused no damage. I have been using the EC in the cans since they came out and have kept using the XG. But this upsets me.It is easy to go to a Wix or Baldwin filter. If Fram doesn't take care of the problem .

Why post asking for input and then ignore this?
Let Motorking have it!

I would not go brand jumping yet. Since I have a diverse selection of vehicles, many of which don't take FU, I can tell you from experience that a rattler happens every once in a blue moon no matter what filter you use.

The only exception to this is my cartridge equipped engines.

Not common.

It would be nice to cut it open and post the results here on BITOG but either way take a video of it rattling around before you cut it opened or send it to Fram.
There is already another video of a fram ultra on You Tube rattling around.

Take a video and post it we all want to see it! Also after you take the video and post it try to contact Jay and see what he says.. I don't think he signed on in a while but im sure he or someone from Fram is checking this forum.

There are fewer and fewer mainstream filters out there that are "good".

As stated above, give it to Motorking. It gives FRAM a chance to improve their designs.

FRAM would probably give you a case of filters to "test" for your troubles, this is all win-win.

It is most likely the leaf spring at the top of the can that tore from fatigue that caused the element to come loose.

This is common-knowledge at this point, I bet a lot of money that FRAM is going to go to coil springs very soon, they have too much on the line.

But, I would feel let down if I pulled a filter off a car I liked and it failed, just not a good feeling, but no harm done.

Good morning,
What email address did you use when contacting FRAM? The correct email is [email protected]. They will email or fax you a claim form and ask for the filter to be sent in. It will be evaluated and a report issued to you. Please contact me directly if you have any issues with this process. [email protected]

Falken,
We will not be going to coil springs anytime soon. Our OE business is now much larger than our aftermarket business. ALL automotive OE's spec a leaf spring becuase it is a better design for reasons I have explained on this forum more than one time.

I can picture a coil spring falling down the center tube of an orange can.

Keep explaining it takes more than a few times, this is the internet. The only thing I don't like about Fram is it is owned by one man who has a yacht with a helicopter landing pad. I'm down to Clarcor looks like to have a USA owner company.
Maybe the retainer spring is missing, or maybe the baseplate bends if tightened hard. I would cut the thing open and see for myself. Fram should already be sending him a new filter with a gift card, prepaid box for return, and a thank you. He's not making it up to get a freebie.
