Fram Ultra for '04 Altima 2.5S

The amount of full synthetic, double layer media in the Ultra is way more than a 2.4L would need. Since the XG7317 is an up-size from the recommended filter, you have even more headroom.

Actually, at one time Purolator showed the 14610 for both the 2.4L 4-cyl and the 3.5L V6, then they specified the smaller on for just the V6. Thought that was strange.

I've been down this road before ... the 14610 has MORE media area than the 14459. Cut and measure verified.

Yes! And it's strange that FRAM is the only filter(of filter that I have looked at/considered) that, lists the smaller of the two filter for my app.

And the larger of the two filters(#7317) isn't what I'd call larger!

Right! I have read this before^^^. Maybe in one of your posts

Now, take for a minute that the Fram #3593A is the equivalent of the Puro #14459. And I am curious if the Fram #3593A also has less media than it's smaller in size, brethren(#'s 6607/7317)?

Yes, I have used even larger filters in the past but, those part#'s have been discontinued(Puro# 24458, very large). And I am actually looking for(experimental only) larger filter. Larger within reason!

Take a look at some Baldwin filters. B1431, B161-S, B199 and for a very large filter(if it can fit) B202. I have used all of these filters on my bikes and cars.

Thank you! I will consider those Baldwin Filters. They're just not as readily available to me as are the other filters. AS I often buy oil/filter change specials and filters that most of my local parts/W*M stores carry.

I went back and looked at some pics I've taken of cut open 7317s and 3593As and they look to have a pretty similar amount of media. The 3593A looks to have more media in some pics, but I cannot tell for sure without taking it all apart and measuring it. It does depend on the brand, of course. Purolator filters are also more efficient in the 3593A size than the 7317 size for some reason. When I get a chance I'll head out to the garage and see if I still have any of the cut open filters lying around to post some comparison pics.

Edit: I also noticed you were interested in Baldwin filters, Hastings filters are identical to Baldwin and I can usually find those for less $$. Another member here told me about Zoro.com (no affiliation) who has them the cheapest I've seen, and sometimes you can order enough for free shipping when they have specials going on. I bought a bunch for my Firebird a while back and I think I ended up paying less than $4 a piece for them after discounts and free shipping. Great construction, but the efficiency leaves something to be desired.

In the 60's & 70's, we used Purolator filters when Dad was in business til '79. In the 80's, I switched to FRAM when Dad retired.

Actually it's the FRAM ULTRA that I want to switch to! And I still have a stash of Puro Classic/PureONE for all cars. When they're gone, I will switch!

I think I can get Hasting's at AAP but, they're expensive. IIRC, they're even more costly than the Fram Ultra's at AAP. But, Walmart has the Ultra's for the best everyday price. And maybe I can get the Ultra's at AAP with CODE#'s

I just want a larger filter that is actually better(if this exist). If not, I will use the Ultra #7317 or #3593A, depending on what information I gather between the two. I just don't like the XTRA small/thimble size of the #6607.

Maybe is just a hangup that I have but, it is what it is!

Just as any FYI; I have also used 9688 instead of 3593; Almost identical in size; not sure what the media comparison would be but, it fits and works well when I don't have 3593, 6607 or 7317 around.

Originally about 10 years ago IIRC they were introduced for Acura/Honda, and now Hyundai uses that number as well as others I'm sure.

If the Baldwin B202 will fit and Wix is easier to get, see if a Wix 51324 or 51182 will work. I didn't check for cross numbers to other filters, should not be to hard to find other filters the same size.

I don't think it's discontinued; my local W*M regularly stocks it. The part number is XG9688 with a price of $13.28 cdn.

Check your suppliers.

IIRC, the 6607/7317 have a slightly different bypass spec than the 9688.

Yes, thank you! I will look up the spec's on the Fram Site! Most likely I will use the XG3593A. But, I will check all the bypass settings on all of them just for safety sake!

I only know this because I have a WIX 9688 equivalent that I bought for my moms car. Sadly she might be trading it in soon so Ill be stuck with it. (As well as a boat load of castrol synblend!)

Our Kubota garden tractor can take the 6607/7317, which as you know is the same thread pattern and gasket size as the 9688. It seems like a decent upgrade compared to the 2, but yeah.. the bypass specs are slightly off.. But who knows, it could be such a small amount to not matter.
