Bought a MicroGard Select MSL51348 about 3 weeks ago, and bought another one today. Noticed the new one was made in Malaysia instead of Vietnam. Didn't look at other models, so don't know if Malaysia is going to be a major maker for MicroGard Selects. Photos below show the difference.

The cream color on the crimp seam is not glue ... it's some kind of optical illusion from the camera flash and cellophane cover - verified visually it's not glue. The Vietnam version has a "23" starting date code and the Malaysia version has a "25" starting date code. Was kind of surprised a "23" was on the shelf 3 weeks ago. The one made in Vietnam said "Made in Vietnam" on the box, not the label. The Malaysia version is printed "Made in Malaysia" on the can label.

Things that are different between the Vietnam and newer build Malaysia version - these differences are with respect to the Malaysia version: Vietnam on left, Malaysia on right.

1) Base plate holes are larger but fewer (6 vs 8).
2) Base gasket is slightly thinner arcoss but the same height above the crimp seam.
3) The center tube holes are slightly smaller but has a few more holes.
4) Number of threads is 3 vs 4.
5) Base plate thickness looks slightly more when viewing it through the holes. No separate cover over base plate.
6) Bypass valve design is the same, but uses a black colored disk instead of a cream colored disk.
7) Both feel about the same weight and the can stiffness seems the same - both feel beefy.
8) The number and size/shape of the flutes on the dome are different, so maybe sad news for end cap tool users.

Both should work fine, just slightly different manufactured configuration. Not sure if other models of newer MicroGard Selects are all switching over to Malaysia or if PGI is ramping up production and splitting factories in Vietnam and Malaysia.

Thanks OP! I just noticed the very same differences this weekend when I changed my oil. (MSL51040).

I really like the Vietnam version but cannot attest (yet) to the Malaysian version. It made me think how quickly the supply chain changes.

I actually noticed this when my oil filter wrench (Cap that fits on the end when needing filter removal) didn't fit the newer version. Hmmmm....

My recently purchased NAPA Gold 1348 was made in Malaysia. It's now on our 2025 Ford Escape.

Since PGI has 2 COO's to manufacture perhaps they've just went to where it was more cost effective depending on market circumstances. Both do look good like, you noted, from an outside observation.

Are the flutes the same size and amount?
No, the Vietnam has 14 flutes and the Malaysia has 15, and the flutes on the Malaysia re much more pronounced as can be seen in the photo.

Probably the same configuration as this Malaysia MicroGard Select since NAPA is now using PGI for the NAPA Gold filters.

To touch on cost, I would not rule out scheduling and capacity to fulfill in the decision to switch up COO also. Sometimes it is cheaper to let one factory crank out a form factor size and rather have the down time to switch over tooling and dies, let another factory that is setup fulfill it.

I'm positive you're onto something. (y)

I was going to suggest perhaps the difference of fresh tooling...but the count change throws that out the window 😆
I have a bunch of filter end cap tools and one of them does fit the MicroGard Select made in Malaysia so they must have went with a known configuration with 15 flutes at least

Just changed my oil last week and found my oil filter "Cap tool" did not fit the newer Malaysia offering. That's when I compared it to the Vietnamese version and found all the differences. Not a huge deal, but I really liked the Vietnamese version.
