Fram Ultra for '04 Altima 2.5S

Is the FRAM Ultra XG7317 OK to use in this application?
In the FRAM guide, the XG 6607 is the recommended part# but, it's sooooooo small and I'd like to use the slightly larger size XG#7317. Is there a reason that FRAM didn't list the 7317 for the Altima? Maybe the gasket size or another reason?

i would put xg 6607 on it, dont worry about it being small, the book is always right

Well, the reason I ask is because most Honda & Subaru use the same larger filters as my Altima in other brands(Purolator, Mobil 1, Bosch D+ etc.) but in the FRAM, it list the smaller!

Years ago my son had a 2002 1.8 Sentra that called for the 6607. I always installed the 7317 that was spec'd for the 2.5. SE-R 50,000+ miles and no problem. No worries at all.

Yes, I have used even larger filters in the past but, those part#'s have been discontinued(Puro# 24458, very large). And I am actually looking for(experimental only) larger filter. Larger within reason!

It will be fine. Motorking (from Fram) himself has said they are interchangeable if you have the room. You could also try the 3593A if you have the width for it (same threads, etc.). I've used the 7317 and 3593A interchangeably as well on my old Acura that called for the wider 3593A.

The 6607 is likely the OEM replacement for you car. While the 7317 would work, the 6607 is the replacement so thats what Fram recommends.

The 7317 is exactly like the 6607 with the exception of the can size. Same gasket, bypass specs etc. Assuming you have the additional room, you should be fine.

I am assuming jacky was saying to use what is spec'd just in case you have a failure with catastrophic damage. Obviously it wont be covered if you are using the wrong filter for the application.

Many folks here at BITOG use different filters that what is recommended. 99.9% issue free.

Does a larger filter actually help? That has yet to be proven.

It could be that FRAM would like to duplicate the overall size of the genuine Nissan filter; as in matching OEM as much as possible.

Yes, you can use the 7317 or 3593 if there are no clearance concerns (ground, moving tires, axles etc.)

IIRC yours sits horizontally by the RF wheel; right?

Yes, I have more than enough room. Which of the 2 filters(7317 or 3593A) has more filtration media? I can use the (Fram 3593A or Puro 14457), when I can't get the Puro P14610.

For years Tearolator listed the 14610 for my Altima then changed it to the 14612. So maybe Fram did the same thing.

I mentioned above that, I also used Puro #14457 but, I meant #14459!

My OE Nissan filter was the size of the Puro 14610 & Fram #7317.

I still use the Puro #14610 or, if I can't find it(out of stock), I'll buy the #14459.

I was looking at the application guide. Tearolator lists the longer 14610 for the 2.5L and the shorter 14612 for the 3.5L. Fram lists the shorter 6607 for the 2.5L and the longer 7317 for the 3.5L.

Take a look at some Baldwin filters. B1431, B161-S, B199 and for a very large filter(if it can fit) B202. I have used all of these filters on my bikes and cars.

A smaller filter I would opine would filter better for normal OCIs since its a fact a slightly dirty filter work better. Wouldnt a smaller filter get dirty faster and then trap more dirt??

A smaller filter will have a higher PSID, so it could push the dirt through the filter and it could go into bypass sooner. Honda says to go 15k miles on the oil filter, so I use a larger filter just to let me sleep better when going 15k miles on one filter.

I'm using the XG7317 on my Altima V6 ... looks good after 12K miles.

2X 6K OCIs ... 12K total miles on XG7317
