Ford tractor 8N oil canister converted to TP filter

Should be able to find a conical type spring like Jackmaster uses, that and a washer, the spring will let the center bolt engage easily. Store like Princess Auto sell a bag with all types of assorted springs fairly cheap.
Thanks didnt have much luck with making a solid spacer. Ended up cutting the spring in half. I can live with that.

Here is the Jackmaster spring set up.

Thanks. That looks like the spring in my flat head Ford V8 canister filter. Did a little dirt work this morning. It takes awhile for the filters to heat up on the Ford diesel tractor. Noticed the full flow filter was warm and the flat head Ford filter was cold. Then I remembered I put a orifice at the Ford bypass filter inlet a couple of weeks ago. I removed the orifice. The tractor has the Perma Cool 189 sandwich adapter. I wont put the orifice at the outlet. I can see why we didnt use any orifice with the old Frantz sandwich adapters.

Today I renewed the bypass filter in the Ram 3500
I had to remove it to work on the turbo and exhaust manifold.
It was very black oil slimy feeling oil on the paper surfaces and basically I had to pull it and unroll it from the center.
The new filter paper is packed tighter this time, still had to unroll a bunch to force into the housing.
Oil enters the bottom center, flows up and out over the top, then filters down through the TP and drains out the bottom.
The smaller tube keeps the spring pressure down on the big center tube, which has a washer on the bottom. The TP roll is a tight fit. The bottom of the big tube has a 3/8 tall spacer to exactly fit the inner paper roll. I can barely blow thru it from inlet to outlet

I think I have it figured out. Start the bolt then push down the lid.

Thats imprint is deeper on the core seal than on the wagon wheel spokes? Must be the thickness of the washer.
Its a 1/8 inch thick washer. The tp core is about 1/4 inch taller than the tp. Thats Great Value 1000 from Walmart. Soft paper would have made a deeper imprint. I ended up using a longer spring and lowering the wire hose clamp.

I have one of those canisters for sale, but it comes with a complete tractor.😀 It is on the Phoenix, Arizona Craigslist and our local FB Marketplace if you’re interested.

Its easy to convert those old canister filters to use toilet paper. John Frantz got his start in 1953 putting a Frantz canister inside the Ford canister. I saw about 6 Purolator conversions on Ebay. Probably John Frantz conversions. Later he came out with his own canisters to put his canisters in. The same as a Fram but chrome plated. There were better systems that didnt need a Frantz canister inside. I was looking for a 8 N. Found a Japanese diesel Ford.

You should be able to see the outside imprint of the wagon wheel, it's not there, I think you may have put the paper in too tight on this one, wrinkles shouldn't be there. I use a ribbon tape on the outside to size the paper as I don't trust my feel and it worked for me, it's consistant, Frantz with a 2 port sandwich adapter, never got those wrinkles with firm paper.

The imprint is there on the tire. The important seal is around the core and between the tp and and the wall of the filter housing.

I converted a flat head Ford V8 canister filter to use a 4 1/2 inch diameter roll of Scott 1000. Cut the thread end of a small full flow filter off and drilled extra holes in it. Debured the holes. Put a spacer under it to put the top of the tp near the top of the filter housing. Had an old radiator cap I used to make a washer to bridge the space between the the tp core and the Ford center tube. The washer is plastic. Used a step drill to make the washer a snug fit. The lid spring pushes down against it. The filter inlet was near the top so I could use it. I put a pipe plug in the outlet and put a new outlet in. I used a self tappjng hollow bolt. I didnt want to use the Ford orifice. The old canisters didnt drain below the orifice put a 1/16 inch orifice at the inlet. No center tube is needed with the 1000 sheet. Later I removed the spacer from under the perforated plate and have half a roll pf VIVA Signature cloth paper towels in it. Dont need a screen. The paper is strong enough.

I zoomed your picture 10x, there is no outside imprint from the wagon wheel, if you think its there then believe what you want, I cannot see whats not there. I do see a wrinkle all the way from top to bottom, you might say it's not there.

The Frantz with the Frantz 2 port sandwichs get wrinkles the same as any tp filter. The wrinkles are no problem unless the wrinkles are long enough to allow oil to bypass the tp.

For demonstration I probably should have used a softer paper or gave it a little more time. If I had a larger pressure difference between the in and out hose it would have a better imprint but might not clean the oil as good.
If all I needed was a good imprint at the bottom I would use a roll of Charmin Ultra Strong.
