Ford Escape or Hyundai Santa Fe

Here's the long-term reliability of the Ford Escape.

And the Hyundai Santa Fe.

They are both quite terrible. Hyundai has been offering engine replacements on their 2.4 Liter engines and Ford is fighting tooth and nail to avoid the same fate. However the 2.5 Liter engine is above average and the six-speed automatic is a perfectly fine transmission.

The right answer? The Mitsubishi Outlander. The only mid-size SUV to have reliability rivaling Toyota and Honda without the huge price premium. Just make sure to have the CVT fluid changed every 30k miles and she can drive it as long as she wants it. The higher trim levels are also quite nice.

Go to 48 Hours And A Used Car on Facebook if you want to buy one. Yes that is a shameless plug. No shame! No shame!

I’m pretty sure the Outlander is a Rogue under the Mitsubishi skin. They are different, but the main bones are the same. It’s much like the VW Routan and a Chrysler T&C minivan. Same car, different face, rear, and interior.

My question is why not buy a vehicle that has a dealer close by.No matter the brand, they need parts and services.Cars are exceedingly complex and sometimes need a bit of finesse to get them right.A close dealership makes that a reality
I would agree but Chamberlain SD is one hour from the next town of any size (Mitchell) and two hours from a “big town “ ( Sioux Falls). We are fortunate that in a town of 2500 we have a Dodge dealership, a Chevrolet dealership, and a Ford dealership. The problem is that there is no used car factory where you can go place an order for a used vehicle that fits one’s needs/budget. We are in a tight vehicle market with a limited supply. Even for dealers. It’s take what you can get and be happy about it. The car that you are thinking about buying today someone else will be driving tomorrow!

The Hyundai and Outlander (average) are basically a push......if you want to believe those charts.
