Hello

I am essentially motor oil ignorant. My 2023 F-150 2.7 Ecoboost sheared Reladyne Duramax 5W-30 down to 8.7 after only 3,100 miles. I take mainly short trips and lots of idling. What oil would you all recommend that would stay in within the 5W-30 range? I have read about euro oils....I was considering and pennzoil or castrol euro oil, but wasn't sure. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Pennzoil 5w30 Euro L would be a good one or you could use 0w40 M1. I've used both in my 3.5 ecoboost F150, I've never used the Castrol euro oils.

Thank you. one last question...do you all thinjk regular pennzoil ultra would be ok? or would you go for the euro L?

Thanks again.

I ran Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 in my '22 2.7 for almost 30k miles with no issues. Plenty of idling and short trips. You may have better luck finding Euro L than Ultra in retail stores.

M1 ESP 5W30 or 0W30 is the new favorite around here, they are also great oils and would serve you well.

Is that due to fuel dilution?

I got schooled hard on here when I claimed my 2.7 was shearing oil too. They do dilute the oil with fuel in the 2-4% ballpark, so that probably played a role in about half of your viscosity drop. I think most 10 cSt ILSAC oils will drop about half a cSt in service even with no dilution, but that’s just from casual UOA browsing not scientific.

Most here would recommend Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 because it will stay in the mid 10’s even with 5% dilution on a 5,000 mile interval in an ecoboost.

I’m using HPL Premium Plus 0W-30 and Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 in my two 2.7’s. Haven’t gotten to the first full interval on either yet but the HPL is coming up for a change in 3 weeks. I did a 500 mile analysis on both of those oils and they both went down 1/2 cSt with 3% fuel dilution.

Go Mobil1 ESP 0W30 in Wal mart. $27 for 5qt. They have also ESP 5W30. Also good, but 0W30 would be my first choice between two.
Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30 is also available in Wal mart or it should be. It seems lately they are out of it. ESP would be my choice, again.
If you don't mind paying a bit more, Castrol Edge 0W30 Euro in Advance Auto Parts goes for $37 + Filter for 5qt.

ESP and Euro L will have MB229.51 approval. Generally, when looking for oil, look for this or MB229.52 approval. Euro approvals are more stringent. Edge 0W30 will have MB229.5 (full SAPS oil). MB229.5/51/52 are gold standard. Oils with those approvals have much stricter limits when it comes to shearing, deposits etc.

Tell you what, I’ve been using Mobil1 0W30 ESP for 8,500 miles now on an interval, it’s the only oil I’ve ever used in my engine that has seemingly not used a drop of oil in that duration. Now, my engine is pretty tight/doesn’t use much oil, but I’ve never seen no noticeable drop on the stick with that type of mileage. And I’ve used Amsoil Signature Series, Pennzoil Ultra, Valvoline Modern Engine, Mobil1 EP, house brand NAPA synthetic, Amalie synthetic, and Pennzoil Platinum. They have all needed around a half quart add in 8,000-10,000 miles.

And this oil change interval started on January 1st - I mention that because that means I drove two months in some pretty extreme cold weather. Cold starts, short trips.

I'd use M1, 5W-30EP which is an excellent oil, and change at the 5K mark, in fact this is what I do in my F150. Meets the Ford spec, which is nothing special, but good to know. The 0W oils are all more likely to shear and not the direction you want to go on an Ecoboost, more viscosity not less is the right direction. More than that, 'some' of the Euro oils may contain a higher level of calcium and ZDDP. Which is generally a good thing, but not for direct injection engines subject to LSPI. Your 2.7 is a direct injection engine (with secondary port injectors)

Also of note, since your engine has a wet Kevlar oil pump belt, using the Ford spec (or similar), along with frequent oil changes, is a good way to ensure you don't experience premature belt degradation. NOTE: Wet belts hate oil contamination.

You could also consider something like Delvac 1 ESP (M1 TDT 5W-40) or Rotella T6 5W-40 or Castrol Edge 5W-40 all have lower calcium and would protect the EB engine very well, without causing any oil pump belt issues.

I would be interested to see how Castrol Extended Protection 5w30 would hold up. It has quite a few pretty stout approvals.
