Experience at quick lube place

Took my stepdaughters 98 Camry to Jiffy Lube yesterday. Because of the potential for sludge problems I don't like to see the oci go long. Jiffy Lube was the only place that was convenient late on Saturday afternoon.

They charge $42 extra for Mobil 1. They tried to sell me an oil additive, a gasoline additive, to rotate they tires which they said needed to be done very badly. I'm not sure how you can tell that tires need to be rotated, especially since I checked the tires a bit ago and they were all 8/32. (Even if they were uneven, how do you know they weren't recently rotated?) The most glaring recommendation was a new battery because the 700 amp rated battery was "only" putting out 560 amps. Mind you, it was 31 degrees at the time.

Most places, be they quicklube or Stealerships are gonna try to sell you more than you need.

The selling is pretty standard. It's how they make their money. I'm surprised they didn't also try to sell you new wipers and a new air filter as well.

He took the air filter out and carried it into the lounge but it has about 10k on it so there was no sell there. He asked about the wiper blades but they were replaced within the last 6 months so he didn't push that one very hard. The main upselling was the battery and, of course, the oil and gasoline additives.

I had a friend once tell me about a buddy who took his car to a Jiffy Lube type place and the lube guy comes over to him and shows him a nasty, dirty, used-up air filter. Tells him he really needs to replace his air filter and they can do it for x amount of dollars.

The customer went over to his own car which was in the shop with the hood up, snaps open his air cleaner box, takes out his brand-new, spotlessly clean air filter and says "Oh, you mean this air filter here?". The dirty filter the employee was showing him wasn't even the right filter for his car.

The last time I went to one was in the late 80's. I saw a manager come out the the young man draining my oil and tell him something. The young man then comes out and tells me I'm missing a very important bolt in the buicks carberator and that they could repair it for 90 bucks. I laughed in his face and told him not to touch a thing.

I had a bad experience some years ago with Grease Monkey and have not been back to a quickie lube since. Valvoline IOC never disappointed me. Fortunately, I have a very trustworthy NAPA garage within walking distance. I'm in the habit of requesting an appt 3 days in advance, but they usually work me on the day of my choice and the prices are very reasonable.

+1, if i can dump m1 or edge in my car myself for what they charge for whatever bulk oil, i figure im way ahead

You need new shocks all around as well for $900.

It is sad, as I have a grown daughter, and she is sometimes conned into wasting her hard earned money. I do most of the stuff, but am not always around, and she wants to be independent as well. That's what it is, conning people. If that is how it is spelled.

Not only that, but it is always a ridiculous upcharge for synthetic, as if it is so unusual to get. I do know synthetic is much harder to pour in, maybe that's it.(joke)

I use to manage Firestone corporate stores.we checked every battery for cca and put a load tester on them.SOLD lots of battery's all year. But mainly in extreme temp change.Winter to summer etc.Thats when most fail.Had lots of folks say thanks before they got stranded.When possable pulled four tires,hoods up and truck open.Sold lots of belts.Sold lots of brake repair as it only took one shoe or wheel cylinder leaking on a axle set to sale a brake repair.All the spares back then in the trunk were flat for the most part and sold lots of tires for the spare including used.If you looked,showed customers and there was tons of legitimate work.No need to scam any one.You can tell if tires need rotate by wear pattern.Plus all you got to do is say NO if you don't won't any work done or explain tires just rotated and thats a old wear pattern.Same with alignments.Might have been done a month before and tech dosen't know that.It all depends on who is running the shops to set the pace and only do work that is needed.I always found lots of work every day.Never ever ripped anyone off and could back up why it needed repair.

Brake jobs are wayyyy out of line price wise, theres a mom n pop shop in my area that runs a radio ad, calling a brake job, a major repair, they even list it w transmission wrk

The problem with Firestone and other national brand repair centers is that they're all owned/managed by different people-a few bad ones spoil it for all the rest. I prefer to deal with ones that I know-that lessens the likelihood of the ripoff!

Yea Jiffy Lube is getting out of control. they always trying to upsale something. Bad enough they charge $36.99 for an Bulk oil change. with the cheapest oil filter they can fine.

Since i started servicing my friends and families cars, ages ago, i noticed that 90% of the cars that were previously serviced at some fast lube place ALWAYS had a tiny oil filter on. The part numbers didn't even match the make or model. i'd find Ford filters on Toyota's

I had one stealership that left the oil cap off and oil spewed all over the engine and hood when I drove off. Then, when a jackwagon at Walmart did an OC, he did not make sure the old gasket from the filter came off with the filter and installed the new filter over the old gasket. Oil was leaking out of my car as soon as I left. By the time I realized what had happened, it was late in the evening and they were closed. Oil all over the place !!

This is why I change my own oil.............

I wonder if the real sleezy places even give you Mobil 1 when you pay for it. They could be refilling the Mobil 1 containers with bulk oil.

Wonder what they would say if you brought them a 5 QT container from Walmart along with a decent filter.
