LOL true, i am robbed every april 15th!!

The thing with guns is you never know if the other person is armed as well.

In NY you supposedly have the duty to retreat - that is, you need to distance yourself from the intruder. So if you lock yourself in a room and they blast the door down, then you can use deadly force.

Otherwise you can use physical force if they're outside the home, but not deadly. However if they're in the process of arson you supposedly can use deadly force.

Very strange terminology in the laws.

The trooper I talked to told me I could shoot but only if they are inside the residence. Obviously written laws > verbatim but that's what he said.

Someone also robbed my shop last January, I think I know that it was the windshield guy. We had a huge snowstorm the night before, and a customer met me there to pick up his car first thing in the am. I had the windshield guy inside doing a windshield while I was outside plowing and snow blowing. My receptionist came in about an hour later, paid him and he left before I finished. I went to pay them later that day and noticed that the $4k was missing that I was handed that morning for that car. I called the cops, and the windshield place, but of course, nothing ever came of it. Surprisingly, he " was injured the next day" and he still hasnt been back. Cash box was fingerprinted, but they normally wear gloves. I also never heard back from the fingerprinting, even after calling for 6 months. Lyndhurst cops working their hardest as usual!!!
Leaving $4k laying around with strangers working nearby, I'm not surprised the cops didn't pursue it. You were asking for it.

And that is part of the problem. Lawyers and the police. The lawyer part is obvious. As far as the police go (and I fully support our police officers), but ever since "policing" was subcontracted out to the police, we lost the ability to defend ourselves. This is no play on words, read carefully.

My point is that repeat offenders, violent crime perpetrators, etc., would quickly disappear if the law abiding public still retained the right to protect their property and defend themselves.

I'm old enough to remember an old news story from San Francisco (the '70s IIRC, I lived in the area). Some dirt bag shot and/or killed a police officer. A cab driver witnessed this and chased the perpetrator down an ally with his vehicle. He pinned the perpetrator against a wall at the end of the ally, destroying the dirt bag's knees. And is so typical today, the dirt bag found another dirt bag - a lawyer this time - to sue the cab driver. I don't recall the outcome other than the fact that the public was outraged at both dirt bags.

He recently moved from the big city, to a couple acres out in the sticks half an hour or so outside of said city.

he is a bit of a "gun nut" and wanted a place where he and his buddies could shoot whenever they wanted.

someone broke in, and stole his gun safe. the whole thing. nothing else was taken.
all they took were his guns, some of which were unfortunately family heirlooms, having belonged to our grandfather, and great-grandfather.

It's someone he knows...

Isn't it always?

Yep an inside job. Probably knew the guy wasn't going to be around.

Had my car stolen once, it was recovered. And of course car broken into several times. Years ago they used to steal the radio a few times. Now even though I leave nothing in the car, they still break in to steal change. Now I don't even leave change in the car and they still smashed the passenger window thinking there must be change inside.

I used to live in a town in N. Calif. It had and has a high crime rate for theft. Lots of drug use there. I was broken into so many times. My car was also regularly broken into. I got to the point I didn't keep anything in the car worth stealing. Changed my stereo in the car back to a factory provided unit. The house and car continued to be broken into with less regularity as time went on. The car would have the key locks screwdrivered and they became useless. The repair on the locks were getting to be a bigger problem than anything being stolen out of the car. I just started leaving the car unlocked. Thief took my ash tray just to annoy me on the last time the car was entered by a thief.

I was living in a old craftsman bungalow so the old wood frame windows were often damaged due to the older type locks being forced. I started changing out to new dual glass vinyl windows which made the house more comfy and harder to break into. I sold the house years ago and moved to Idaho. No break ins since moving here. One day I expect it will occur.

Hopefully you tracked this guy down a confronted him about the stolen cash.

Never been burglarized or robbed. Always had at least one dog around the house, and I don't mean a little lap yapper growing up and as an adult. Always had a firearm as well, my young bachelor days a Universal M1 Carbine was my go-to. I lived in some really sketchy neighborhoods when I was a young man making my own way, and I worked all sorts of odd hours at marine petroleum & petrochemical docks.

Yeah, I also paid an extra $200K to live in a low crime area.

I had a backpack lifted while I was in college (had an office to do work in, in the basement of one of the college buildings--and I had at least one teacher across the hall from me, hardly a dungeon). Other than that, no.

Rural area out here. Not unheard of to hear gunshots in the afternoon, locals plinking away with high power guns in their backyard. Crime exists, but so far, not on this end of town.
