Draining oil time

My routine starts by draining the oil. Washing my hands. Getting the new oil and filter out of the garage. Check all of the other fluids, air filters, etc. Changing the oil filter. That usually takes about 10 minutes. Then replace the drain plug and refill. It is usually dripping a drop per 10 seconds at that point.

After I remove the drain plug i'll lower the car so its level while it drains. Then usually tinker around the garage for a little bit (20ish minutes). Then finish up, no need to over think it.

This only works if you run the engine at WOT. Otherwise it won't all come out.

I was just kidding about running oil through it. Really though i change my oil with the car on ramps and i only let it drain while i am removing the filter and filling the new one and putting it on. When i finish putting the new filter on its time to put the new oil in. 10-15 minutes maybe of draining? With the car on ramps and the drain plug in the back of the pan it seems to get more out than jacking it up.

Mine are usually very hot (30 mile commute) and I drive it on the wooden ramp (4 - 2x12s staggered) before shutting it down. I pull the plug and it drops out pretty fast, but I catch my sample for the UOA mid-drain. While the rest is draining, I get the filter ready and shake the bottles so about 20 minutes for the drain and by that time it is merely dripping. Insert plug, R&R filter, dump 7 QTs new oil, empty pan into 5 gallon sample bottle (for recycling) and call it an OC.

Oh dear, you guys are going to probably start yelling at me, but I drain all the oil out and let it sit for a few minutes, then I turn the crank for maybe a half a second or so to flush out any left over oil. After reading this thread I'm thinking maybe it's not such a good idea as for the oil pump losing it's prime? Well, it's worked perfectly fine over the years and I've never lost an engine....

Probably not the best idea!

I drain the oil at 185 degrees.

I replace the drain plug when it stops dripping constantly.

Honestly at that temp it takes 10 minutes...tops. If I'm bored ill dump a little clean oil before putting the plug in.

One can drain the oil for a week, month or a year and never get out a considerable amount of oil out of the engine. If draining all used oil out of the engine was that important, manufacturers would provide the means to do so.

Until the flow isn't steady anymore. One it's that "very thin line" while draining, I stick the plug back in and go from there. You will NEVER get the engine bone dry, so no need to wait all night.

Joke:

Pull the drain plug now and let the oil flow until the new API rating of "SO" is officially released in 2 years. By 2015, oil blends will be different - just in time for refill of an overly dry engine with a rusted body.

I have in the past (not any more) drained the oil, drained the oil filter and refitted, refilled the engine with just a 3/4 qt of fresh oil just enough to cover the oil pick-up tube (best to only attempt this in vehicles with an OP gauge) and then fired up the engine and let run for 30 seconds or so. Then I drained the oil.

I stopped doing it since the "fresh" oil drained out of the engine was not that dirty, if the engine was basically clean and not sludged up, and would have had plenty of life left in it. It was obviously a wasteful practice.

5-10 minutes depending on how the lube shop does it....

Sometimes i feel like letting it all drain for 10 minutes, and then pouring some "clean new oil" with the oil plug open, say about 0.5 quarts to let residues pour out with new oil... Dont know how effective will it be...

I once had a vw and in true german detail they said in owners manual to drain it til u were getting only 1 drop every 10 seconds
