My neighbor has a yorkie pup that barks nonstop when it gets dark . It stops when the owner gets home about 2 hours later . This dog is kept indoors but it is still audible with my windows closed . I have had a few dogs of my own that barked outside but never in a nonstop 2 1/2 hour clip like clockwork . Do you think it will eventually outgrow this ? I feel like I should be patient but it has been going on daily Mon - Fri . for 2 weeks now and is becoming a P.I.T.A. .

Record the dog and play it to the owner. If he doesn't do anything, play it out the window on your stereo at 2 AM!!

I just dealt with this in my high-rise condo building. I wrote a very simple 3 sentence note that said: 1. Your dog barks for several hours whenever you leave 2. Everyone can hear the dog barking, even inside their own units 3. I trust you can fix this so I don't have to go to the management Wasn't threatening, rude, or disrespectful. Problem was corrected the next day.

Absolutely not. Its acquired behavior. The more he is allowed to do it the more (in the future) he will do it.

I have the same problem with the neighbors yorkie - and it's 5 yrs old and STILL barks like crazy, ALL the time! What have I done? Everything shy of calling the exterminators. Those dogs are the most annoying dogs on the planet...

In the past, I've resulted to reporting the behavior to the city ordinances on one neighbor, but that was because he was tying his dog to his deck without food/water and the dog was hanging himself with the short rope. They put a stop to that pretty quick. At this time, I'm dealing with 2 dogs living behind me. The neighbors built 2 dog houses and they appear taken care of, but they bark anytime they feel like it including all hours of the night. No idea what to do.

My yorkie is very quite. Never barks. Too many have small dog syndrome. Blame the owner, not the dog. It is there fault the dog feels dominant.

That doesnt help with the iussue of nuissance dogs that are prevalent.

Same thing with my neighbor's chihuahuas. Can't do anything about them other than sleep aid in cheap beef. (just kidding)

Ive called by law from anything from nasty yards to barking dogs and they are quick and effective. It is your right to enjoy your home and yard.

I think I will speak to the owner about it . I will first pay her dog a compliment then fill her in on the barking . On the weekends and when she is home there is virtually no barking . Thank you for the responses . I will keep them in mind if this does not get resolved . At least in this country we do not put these guys on the menu.

The reason why so many dogs are barking at animal shelters may be because they all barked too much at their homes and they were confiscated or the owner brought them there due to complaints or whatever. I try to be a good neighbor but if I have to listen to a barking dog too much, I will definitely complain to animal control. I'd NEVER let the owner know it was me that complained. that could open up a can of worms you'd wish you never opened. Don't let the owner know in any way that you're annoyed by the barking. Let them try to figure out who complained, and if they accuse you of complaining, tell them they're sadly mistaken! Don't go there with them. They may have relatives or friends that could hear about it and possibly want to pay you back. They may never forget it, and may pay you back 5 years from now. Don't create new trouble for yourself. Stay totally anonymous.

Hard to believe some of these responses.... I guess I'm glad I don't live in some of these neighborhoods. If I have a problem with one of my neighbors, I actually try talking to them about it first. I'd expect the same. One of my dogs was a barker, but only when I wasn't home. I'd have never known if my neighbor didn't say anything about it? My neighbors dog has jumped a 6 foot fence and I've had to put him back in his own yard. He's also opened a deadbolted door to get out and jump said fence. He was quite appreciate when I put him back in his own house--and mentioned that his dog happens to be Houdini. Talking to people normally works out pretty well. As far as the barking, shock collars work well. They're humane, and the dogs figure it out right away. Both my vet and my dog trainer recommended this as a solution and it worked great. I used it for about a month and that was the end of the mid-day barking. In total I think my dog received the "correction" about 4 or 5 times, max.

In my neighborhood, you're wise to not cross any of the neighbors, and personally, I don't think I ever really want to get to know most of them. I tend to like being a loner. They live in apartments for a year or two, and then they're gone. Lots of minority people come and go, and if you openly complain about their dog, you're pushing your luck. Maybe you don't live in a neighborhood like mine, but I wouldn't dream of openly complaining to anyone about their barking dog. What would you do if you spoke to them and they laughed at you, and ignored your request? Could you handle that, or would the situation escalate? Would you then go to the police and animal control? That's why I say, I'd NEVER let the person know I was annoyed by their dog. That can escalate to all kinds of problems. You're best to keep your mouth shut and stay anon. Keep your annoyances a secret or they could come back to haunt you.

The dog will never stop on its own. You can try to talk to the owner, but if they knew how to fix it they probably would. Buy a video from the dog whisperer (http://www.cesarsway.com/) and simply hand it to them. If it all has to be done on the sly, tape a sticky to it telling them their dog barks nonstop and tape/hang/leave it on their door/step. Discuss it with them later. Cultivate a good relationship with them about it. Or, learn to block it it or ignore it. I've battled animal owners for decades. I've trained people on many things over the decades. The biggest reason for not doing something is not knowing how to fix it. It becomes a larger thing than the problem when they get their back up. Give them the knowledge and don't provide them a mental reason to resist.
