Coyote Tick Oil Choice

I couldn't care less if someone asks.

If this is solvable without 3rd party addins, I think that's a better solution.

Yep, I know, I've read them. Lots of those thread were around 5w-20, since that's what Ford spec'd at the time.

Have I violated some rule by making this thread?

I’ve tried various viscosities and brands of oil in my 21 Mustang GT. Nothing really stops the tick, some oils are quieter than others, but they all tick. Also the tick usually subsides around 1-1.5k miles into the OCI. As Ford says, “it’s a normal operating characteristic of the Coyote engine”. There’s plenty of 300k coyotes out there that have ticked their whole lives, reported by owners. I don’t even sweat it anymore.

A friend of mine has a Mustang that had a tick sound, very pronunced with Mobil 1 ,,then he went and used Schaeffer's oil, nice and quiet now and used same Fram filters, must be a better oil it seems.

I'm not worried. I'm hesitant to jump to the most expensive option before ruling out more accessible and less expensive options.

If I knew it were a guaranteed fix, I'd do it. I don't see evidence of that.

It's not really more expensive if you run it to its full potential (backed by UOA's).

There are no guarantees, but doing constant oil change swaps with cheaper oil and tossing it because it doesn't help isn't cheap either.

Just my pair of pennies.

You’re right that dumping good oil is costing money.

I have a warranty to consider, so running it longer than the OLM isn’t something I’m going to do. Right now I seem to average about 10% / 500 miles.

I've done 2 (short interval) oil changes on m Mustang. The tick popped up slight after the first and it's louder with the second. I drive next to concrete or brick walls pretty often, where it's most noticable, and it bugs me.

I'm using Kirkland 5w-30 right now, I'm only 100 miles in to this change, but I'm going to dump it. Yes, it bugs me that much.

What is a good next one to try? I'm considering:

Valvoline EP 5w-30
ESP .... 0w or 5w?

I really want to avoid Ceretec as a fix.
The Hemi guys swear by Red Line 5w30. I run it as well and it makes my B58 not sound like a little tractor anymore

My son had a 5.0 Mustang with that ticking. I listened to it and it seemed (to my ear) to come from the fuel injectors.
Yeah I think a lot of people confuse bottom end tick with the injectors, then there’s also the awful sounding 2k rattle. It’s a noisy engine in a lot of good ways and bad ways.

I wouldn’t be playing around with extended OCIs under warranty either. Plenty of time for that later.
Or an oil like hpl that has no official certification. I recommended Hps and it’s the same way. I believe schaeffers is approved, it’s at least dexos and SP compliant. I did use hpl in my new 2024 for a few oil changes and am now running torco SR1 and neither of those are official SP oils. I like to live on the wild side.

Mine ticks less after the oil has been in it for a while. So maybe the best thing for the tick is actually an oil that you're comfortable running for the full OCI.

I'm using Quaker State Ultimate Protection 5w30 and I have not heard it tick since shortly after the oil change. I'd just stick with what you're using and see if it stops after 1000mi
