It was $5.95/quart since it was initially only available retail through the Mobil gas station distribution and limited in supply. As the supply increased, it still got distributed only through the gas stations, but they sold "cash and carry" quarts for $4.95. I think the price pretty much stayed flat for an eternity.
 
Back in 1974 you could buy most brand name oil in the 50-70¢ range per quart at Wal-Mart, and a filter for a buck. $3-$4 for a oil change. About half the amount that the OP mentioned at the beginning of the thread. That is about the same discount for DIY that you see today. The AAP oil and filter specials are usually about $15, and most quick lubes around here charge about $30. You still pay about double for staying clean.
