Consumer Reports reviews car waxes...

The article agrees with my personal experience. If you want to wax only once or maybe twice a year and have paint protection, then pick NuFinish or maybe Turtle Wax ICE. I you need a showroom shine and are willing to wax every month then pick one of the others.

Meguiars has violated both copyright laws and CU policy of no company may use their reports for marketing.
meguiar's didn't post it. a forum user did. I'm sure they have a disclaimer...

Michael Stoops posted it and is the forum moderator and an employee of Meguiars.

Had a plain user posted it, they would have included ALL the wax ratings. In this case they only included far enough down the scale to include the Meguiars wax products or that is what it looks like. Its also possible that one or more Meguiars wax products were excluded because they were the bottom of the barrel.

I have read(on & off) CR Mag for over 35 years and I remember Nu-Finish coming in 1st place several times over the years with Meguiar's Cleaner Wax eclipsing N-F the next time around(several years later). And then, it seemed that N-F had come in 1st place again later on. The last time I read the CR test on waxes/polishes, Black Magic Wet Shine had been their #1 choice. Now it seems as though Meguiar's is in the top spot again!

What I do remember about CR Mag testing on waxes/polishes, is that when they did test some highend or specialty/boutique polishes such as, for example, ZYMOL, it too rated very high but it was very expensive(double the price) compared the the Nu-Finish, Meguiar's, Black Magic. And, the higher end products did no better in any area. Maybe this has changed.

I one time bought some Liquid Glass base on all of the HoopLa. Tried in on a large section of one of my daily drivers along with a bunch of other products...Nu-Finish, Finish 2001, Blue Corral, Rain Dance, Yellow Wax, Detailers Choice, & one of those waxes in colors. Some others too; I don't remember all of them now.

Nu-Finish, Liquid Glass, Yellow Wax and Rain Dance all did the ~ same as-far-as I could tell with the others showing less gloss improvement.

Finish 2001 and Wax in Colors seemed to be too abrassive on a nice finish actualling dulling the paint causing surface swirl marks.

Unfortunately Consumer Reports didn't test the products that get mentioned the most at different detailing forums. If you want to know what hobbyists and professional detailers use, and a lot of it is reasonably priced, visit some dedicated detailing forums.

Which is why they didn't test any of the "good" waxes....

Same here on ALL of the points above.

...and I'd take any Duragloss, Klasse, or Zaino product over NF as well....

What is CR's agenda if I might ask? They would test car waxes the average Joe could buy at Walymart or AAP or AZ, etc. I tried to find some Duragloss at those 3 stores and could not.

If they tested wrenches they would probably test Craftsman and the house brands from HD and Lowes. No Snap-On, etc.

As their name implies, they report on what consumers are likely to buy, not what a professional in the trade might buy.

I know that there are many good products out there that give a better gloss but we die-hard NuFinish users are sold on the durability of this product. I only "wax" my cars once a year...in the fall before the temps get too low. I clean the car, clay and apply the Nufinish...a week or two later I apply another quick coat. I'm good to go until the next year (granted I keep the car washed frequently). I've never used a more durable product...it's still protecting almost a year later. With almost 5 months of cold and winter weather here there's no way I could be doing this routine every couple of months.

NuFinish does have good longevity and a shine. But there are products that outlast it and will not stain trim like NuFinish does. Again, go visit dedicated detailing forums and you will see what they recommend. You may surprised that NuFinish is almost never mentioned.

I don't care so much about the shine. For me its more important for the wax to last and protect. With that said, I found collinite 476 and nufinish equally good.

Drawbacks: Collinite is more difficult to remove and nufinish highlights deeper scratches and rock chips. Both of them stain trim.

The 476 is a bit tougher to apply than Nu Finish or Collinite 845. What I found works very well, for anyone interested in a 2 coat job, is a coat of 476, then 845 on top. I gave it a week between coats and boy does it last.
have any of you had any experience with using touch-less car washes that have applied 476, does it still bead after winter i know it says detergent proof on the can but these places can use some awwwfully strong stuff. it wasn't a touch-less but a friend took her car through a car wash around here after her car had been sitting in the sun for 4 days with SPRAY PAINT on it from her friends, i told her to find new friends and you'll probably never get that paint off now. she tried using her fingernail beforehand and not a bit of it came off. took it through the wash and it was gone. that's gotta say something about the detergents these places are using.

I'm pretty sure that 2nd coat is a waste of time, effort, and product. That stuff has loads of cleaners in it.
