Volk06, what does it mean? Do you think it has something to do with the MC oil I had been using?

No probably not, we've torn down engines run on MC/Trop artic and theyve been spotless. My guess is its from a seal conditioner in the oil or its just how the new synthetic is interacting with the seals and gaskets.

WHY? You just wasted a good oil with lots of life left in it. Most oils don't start cleaning 100% until 2-3K.

I see that greyish mark all the time if I check oil after a while. Especially on tranny dipstick (I check rarely). I believe this is ferrous dust on magnetized dipstick.

I got the same thing on my 99 Mercury Tracer last oc running Auto Zone brand 10w-30 mixed with a couple of left overs like QS 5w-20 and Havoline 10w-40. Cleaned the pcv when I changed the oil.

That abused and neglected engine was cleaned up as an experiment to test the validity of the claims which are made about bypass filtration, by using some plain old cheapo dino 15w-40 diesel oil a new full flow filter and a Frantz filter.
When i stripped the engine down to rebuild it. It all looked quite respectable with little to no indication of what it's condition originally was

It really opened my eyes as to the potential of using superior filtration systems.

Amsoil have a good bypass system available as well.

It's worth considering for keeping the engine clean. let alone for the potential to explore extended drain intervals.
If one is genuinely considering UOAs. Integrating UOAs into the equation with bypass filtration will take you into another realm altogether when combined with extended drain intervals. It's a complete package, otherwise one is just playing around IMO.

Remember that a UOA wiil not give you much of an idea about the engines state of cleanliness. IMO a look down the filler plug hole will possibly tell you more, and its cheaper.

I have an old Franz filter that I pulled off an old Karmann Ghia before selling the car. What brand do you recommend for the filter media? I used Scott single ply toilet paper, but didn't know what would be best.

I've got another car in mind for the Franz Filter, but haven't decided on a best location for placing the canister.

On the Frantz website they mention the scott single ply as acceptable.
I have a stock of the genuine Frantz rolls, so that's what i use.
They're both cheap as chips in the grand scheme of things.

Location of the canister is probably the hardest part of the equation.
Once you decide its all good to go forward.

Cheers
