I've read here that the add packs are very similar. Which has the better base oil? Overall based on user experience, which seems to be the better oil?

The add packs and results with both are indeed very, very similar. As far as base stocks that's not likely anything we'll ever to do much more than speculate about.

If I had to guess, I'd say VWB probably has better base stock than GTX but that's only a guess. VWB has lower HTHS and a higher VI than GTX yet it seems to resist shear just as well if not better, so that would suggest to me superior base stock of the two.

JMO.

I use Castrol GTX in my Chevy 350 v8 and Blackstone says it is the lowest wearing 350 they have on file......FWIW.

Interesting. What grade are you using? 10w30 maybe?

I used valvoline for the first time in a vehicle in my girls windstar this latest interval. The conventional 5w-20. Thus far the engine sounds great and she has mentioned how smooth its running, which is a shock to me because she isn't really tuned into a vehicle. So for my first use I'm happy with it. I don't think there would be a difference in wear between either,so pick the cheapest. That's how I ended up with the valvoline.

Funny thing,my gf said something similar as well when I changed her V6 Mustang over to VWB from M1. I must admit,it does have smoother power with the VWB. Maybe some engines just respond better to certain oil chemistry's?

Realistically, the only fact that proves one is "better" between the two you're gonna find is price. Get whats cheaper. Castrol GTX is often dirt cheap around here and is a pretty no-nonsense dino oil.

Both Valvoline WB and the Castol GTX are not what they used to be. They are ok oils but nothing special by far and they both have a very low TBN so you already start "in the hole" compared to other oils. Valvoline starts with a 6.1 and GTX at 6.3..the average is 7.4 to 9. Walmart Supertech TBN is 7.6.

Just check the tests here:

Good point but.... I'd bet at 6k there's a good chance both the VWB and Castrol would have a higher TBN than ST. Depletion is not linear, so while starting TBN is definitely interesting for comparisons sake you can't simply judge an oil by it's starting TBN alone. If that were the case everyone on here would be running HDEO's.

Valvoline WB and GTX are nearly the same oils. Both are blended out of Ashland in the US. If you go to the Ashland MSDS search page, you will find the MSDS for both Valvoline and GTX. There may be some proprietary tweaks to each oil, but they are more alike than different, and probably share the same base oil chemistry.

GTX is blended by Ashland?

5w30. Do a search for my 1997 Tahoe in the UOA forum.

They have similar base stocks too. Both are light paraffin base stocks.

Personally dont like Valvoline too much unless its a steal.

Why is that both are nearly identical it is not like blends have many choices on where to buy basestocks and additive packages.
