Castrol Edge 0W-40 lost LL-01?

BMW specs are a large portion of the chatter here (and for various reasons) … but you know what the US sales percentage is?

I think there is enough sale for oil companies to make products specifically meeting those specifications. Do not forget BMW for a long time was highest volume seller of luxury cars, I think now they are second.
Interestingly Valvoline changed packaging of its 5W40 MST and they are now recommending for both LL01 and LL04.

True … but Mobil has long raced and marketed with MB, Porche, and GM … sure likes the factory fill (still has many) and likes to sell private label and high volumes etc … so there is opportunity for others to chase BMW more …
Also seems Mobil does not chase Ford or FCA very hard …

I am not sure why Mobil1 dropped BMW approval also when it comes to LL04. But then there are some strange things happening to Mobil1 anyway.

I was poking around the WalMart website, and it says, "Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 meets a host of licensing requirements and specifications: API SN, API SM, API SL, API SJ, API CF, ACEA A3/B3, ACEA A3/B4
BMW Longlife-01
Meets Ford WSS-M2C937-A
MB-Approval 229.3/ 229.5
Porsche A40
VW 502 00/ 505 00"

Walmart's website has an outdated product description.
However, this drop of LL-01 spec was fairly recent, so it's possible that the product sitting on the shelf at your local Walmart may still carry that spec until they get a fresh batch in.

I must admit I'm a little surprised that this oil no longer carries the LL-01 certification, so I contacted Castrol directly through their Facebook page.

I said, "I've noticed that the Castrol EDGE 0W-40 (A3/B4, 229.5, A40) does not seem to carry LL-01 anymore. Is this correct?" and they replied, "Thank you for contacting Castrol North America, Yes this is correct - Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 no longer meets the BMW LongLife-01 (LL-01) specification.

Well that sucks.

Time to find a new oil for my fleet.

I hope Castrol reads this. They just lost my business (4-5 cases/yr), and I used to recommend this oil to all my friends.

Will probably switch to Motul 0W40.

Unless your cars are under warranty, I wouldn't think twice about using Catrol 0W-40, or M1 for that matter.

FYI, all the Edge 0W-40 (5qt and 1qt bottles) at my local Walmart still shows LL-01 spec, so this new stock hasn't trickled in yet.

The new Mobil1 0W40 is not that great, breaks down way too quickly. If the Castrol is headed this way, no thanks.

I agree! After all, the Castrol is still A40 approved!

Here is Porsche A40 testing procedure:

This test will last 203 hours. The engine, and the oil, will go through:
- 4 times the simulation of 35 hours of summer driving,
- 4 times the simulation of 13.5 hours of winter driving,
- 40 cold starts,
- 5 times the simulation of 1-hour sessions on the "Nürburgring" racetrack,
- 3.5 hours of "running-in" program
Measurements on the engine and on the oil will be done at regular intervals, and the following parameter
will be taken into account to grant the approval or not:
- torque curve (internal friction),
- oxidation of the oil,
- Piston cleanliness and ring sticking,
- Valve train wear protection. Cam & tappet wear must be less than 10 μm.
- Engine cleanliness and sludge: after 203 hours, no deposits must be visible.
- Bearing wear protection: visual rating according to Porsche in-house method.

So is any decent xx-40 a3 oil. Example Mobil super 3000 x1 5w-40 and is very cheap too

Heard that about M1 0w40, that the VII gets permanent shear too quick. In your case, your choice of Castrol 0w40 is still good. That oil hasn't changed much if any since losing LL-01. It's Mercedes 229.5 rating is awesome enough, a very tough spec approval.

mightymousetech's M1 0w40 is the non-ESP version, the 229.5 oil. Not the corvette oil.

Castrol has had the new bottle label graphic for a while now. Losing LL-01 is very recent.
