Burned a little oil….

Ford ranger 2.3 ecoboost turbo. On vacation. 650 interstate miles each way. Fresh oil change with QSUP 5w30 about a week or so before I left. Had under 300 miles on it.

Now it’s almost a quart low. Truck hasn’t burned oil before. Should this be concerning? 18k on the truck.

Perhaps QSUP isn’t strong enough for the heat/turbo of the ecoboost. Thats what I get for trying to save a few dollars 🫤

Thinking about going back to Castrol edge black bottle or valvoline advanced. Opinions & experiences regarding QSUP welcomed.

Never had an issue with any Shell products and usage compared to other brands. I have seen it before where a different brand will be consumed a little bit during a first usage. If you wanna use QS I’d give it another oci. If not either of the other options you listed are quality products as well.

I'd have to agree with this based on my experience as well.

In the early 00's, my GF and I bought a 97 Escort. Ran like a top and considering we did plenty of highway driving, I figured it would be a great candidate for extended OCI's on M1 5w30. I'd swap out the filter at 6 months and top up accordingly, with a fluid and filter change at 12 months. The engine consumed/leaked no oil.

Then I found a sale on QS Full syn 5w30 and decided to give it a try. I anticipated similar results as with M1 (since both are reputable oils).
I was wrong. After the first couple of months the engine started consuming oil. I couldn't explain why, as our driving habits hadn't changed.
Once I went back to M1 the consumption stopped and I was able to continue my yearly OCI's with no top-ups.

YMMV

That 2.3 was probably turning about 2k rpm on the interstate if you were doing 80 mph in drive. The 10-speed trans ensures the engine doesn't work too hard at highway speed (I assume you weren't towing anything). If that consumption rate continues I'd want to know why. Most of the complaints I see about Rangers, and I own one, is that fuel dilution is pushing the oil level up the stick.

when speaking of the same viscosity range......
....Some engines don't like certain brands. Of the two you used prior, Valvoline Advanced would be my pick.
I'm not a Black Edge fan. My used oil of Edge Black looked pretty beat-up at only 3k.

If I can recommend one, it's Mobil-1 EP Triple Action 5w30, in the same price range as what you shopped for prior.

This is a first for this engine. Like others, fuel dilution always pushed the oil up. I just found it strange it lost a quart. No towing. Just a bed of luggage. For the most part I was staying between 70-80 mph. However my mpg which was averaging 18.6 since new increased to a whopping 18.7 🙄

Many members on here run QSUP with no/zero issues --- including myself. Switch back or move forward with another oil. Remember to post your results with the new oil when you go on a extended high way run for multiple hours.

Have you ever put that many highway miles over a short period of time on the truck before? Like 777 said some engines dn't like certain oils. Who knows why....This may be an isolated event. I wouldn't expect QS 5w30 to have a great Noack value, but that isn't accurate for oil consumption either in all situations. I think that's what they're changing it for GF-7.

This will end up being about a 1400+ mile round trip. The first and longest like this. Until now I’ve never had an oil loss, only fuel dilution pushing it up the stick.

How do you drive? Hills/mountains? Do you floor it often?

I'm 1100 miles into my first interval with QSUP 0w20 and just checked the oil level yesterday and it still shows full. My Civic only uses half a quart every 10k, so I wasn't expecting to see the level drop just yet anyway.

Ok thanks. It's probably from all the highway driving. Fuel dilution can offset some oil consumption so maybe this type of driving kept fuel dilution low and you saw oil consumption from volatility. Some engines just use oil from the start regardless.

How many oil changes in 18k

What year is the truck.
I've had mos2 reduce oil burning from ring sticking.

Keep track of that oil usage.

Really. My 4x4 with locking rear diff averages 22+ mpg. It drops a couple mpg in the winter when I run winter tires.
