soon I'll be switching my cartridge filter system to a spin on type filter. I am going to let you all decide my next oil filter for when I switch, then I'll do a UOA to see If there is any change. Here's the plan...

This is the link to conversion kit...

This is the link to the walk through for install...

http://www.mazda3forums.com/showthread.php?t=339596

The filter that will go on the car with be equivalent of a AC PH53, casite cf563, etc. After the conversion I will have plenty of room to run a larger filter something like a wix 1516... I would like to do so for hopes of maybe extending my OCI. I'll try and keep a running tally while filter suggestions are made. I'll be doing this conversion in the next couple of weeks so I want to compile as much info as possible.

This ought to be fun. Thanks guys!

Troll?
to OP, whats wrong with cartridge type? You can always inspect for defects, and inspect after use without cutting anything.

Wix, I use a 51515 larger than stock filter on my 300C SRT-8. Wix is an excellent filter and also makes the NAPA gold as a private label.

I agree... no fram for me.

I've had two Cartridges collapse on me. Two different brands. I know I could stick with cartridge and go to a more premium filter, and be happy... But for 30 bucks I can have spin on (easier/cleaner) and more importantly the possibility of longer OCI.

Are you out of warranty on the engine you're doing this on?

yes, currently 76,500 mi

would love this for a toyota sienna 3.5, the cartridge is messy and a waste of time in my opinion.

Would you be so kind as to share which cartridge filters you had issues with? There is very little info here regarding cartridges comparted to the spin on info we have.

And how exactly did they collapse?

OP - The PureOne is a favorite here, would be a good place to start.

This is the Casite

This is the Champ

Neither filter are complete failure but definitely do not stand the test of my 7500 mi OCI. I posted those pics on a thread here last week and one BITOGer suggested the filter conversion. I have known about that mod for about a year and a half now and never though it necessary til now. The one thing these two filter do not have that a lot of top brand filters do is a support tube in the middle to add strength.

another vote for PureOne here,
I would also have to vote for a NAPA gold (WIX) these two are deff. the best bang for your buck

I thought the same. but i put another casite in and tightened it down. backed it back out and it had not "squished" like the other.
