Fairly recently, my wife and I cleaned out the garage considerably. In so doing, we made several boxes and crates of "automotive stuff". Since I have my "new" 1997 4Runner coming, I thought I'd look for filters. I discovered 4 filters that will work.

I can't read the date codes on the CarQuest blue filters, but RockAuto was selling these out when CarQuest was switching to Purolator, so they are Wix/Napa Gold style. I didn't want to unwrap them. First up, the Napa Platinum filter shows a code of 090413E1, which I think means Sept. 4, 2013. This is the first one I'm going to use. The Purolator Synthetic shows a date of F01F1382, which I think is Jan. 2, 1996. I'll use this one after the Napa Platinum, since it's in a box and less likely to get contaminated. Then the CarQuest blue.

We used to have an old beater Toyota Corolla that got passed around the family when somebody needed a car. Maybe these were for that.

Nice discovery sir

I had no idea the Purolator was reinforced media back then. Really cool find. Thanks for sharing. Any chance of cutting up the Purolator to post or keep it as a rare relic?

Interesting, I just didn't know any Purolator had that feature that old. I need to find out just how old that one is.
Yeah, it was a good filter. Must not have sold well and Purolator decided to discontinue it.

I have one of those Purolator synthetic oil filters (same size as that one...PSL10241). The DOM was 7/11/2013. It's been stored well and I plan on using it next on my Focus.

Even get a fresh Fram EG3614 for $4 that was made recently is better. Except the Napa platinum the media should be ok. There is no way to know the usability of the media and rubber parts. But it’s your 97 to do with as you please.

I agree. This is a cool find, but I personally wouldn't use a filter that's this old. My concerns would be, say they have metal end-caps glued to the media. Is that glue now brittle and prone to breaking away from the media upon use? Has the rubber gasket expired and may leak? Does the media itself get brittle over that many years? Humidity exposure? It doesn't seem worth it.

I think the boxed one is more susceptible to temp/ humidity swings, so I'd use that first.

The packaging is so '90s. It takes me back.
Yeah, if they've been sitting in the garage for years, chances are theyre rusted inside depending on how much humidity. My oil filters stay inside the air conditioned shop and inside a zip lock bag. Or the Walmart grocery bag if I got it from there. Then I tie the handles in a knot to keep dust out.
