Oil Filter for Generator with 2013 4.3L GM Vortec V6

just because it doesn’t blow up isn’t a good reason to run inferior products.

That seems to be the new standard for picking products these days, regardless of the actual performance of the products. My view is that better oil filtration can certainly made a difference in wear over the long run and help maintain top mechanical heath of the engine. Lots of wear studies show a direct correlation between oil cleanliness and engine wear. Same with running a bit thicker oil than 2.6 cP, more HTHS gives more film thickness and less wear in studies. That's all I need to know with respect to oil filter efficiency and oil viscosity.

I accidentally ordered a Fram Synthetic Endurance and a Premium Guard XL for the generator. Which would you run? I would guess the premium guard due to the valving issues on the Fram spin-ons? Is there a way to non destructively test the Fram valve before installation? Or all they all leaky? I can still return one or hold one back for next change.

To test the Endurance non destructively, keep the base plate up add a thimble full of oil in the filter around the outside of the bypass valve and let it sit. If the oil is gone after a while it leaked through.

It should be the same as any other 4.3, so all you need to do is figure out whether it's the newer LS-based V6 or the old V6

Even a Super Tech or other cheap filter that's not Purolator or Wix will be fine

And of course, there's ACDelco

That's testing the ADBV, not the leaf spring which it sounded like you wanted to check for leaks in post 22.

The leaking leaf spring is down bottom. Sorry I should have been more detailed. Here’s a pic of where the oil needs to go.

Put a few ounces onto the bypass valve, I might’ve used too mix oil for the test though.

Looks about the same? I know oil will wick up the pipe cleaner a little but but I took the pictures after dipping them in for 3 seconds, then taking the picture within 10 seconds.

Some leaked out because the level was high enough to hit some of the louvers.

You may have inadvertently filled the dome with oil through the louvers. I only used about a thimble full. It only took a few seconds to leak through.

No idea, but dang that's a big engine for a back up generator. Seems like sized for a small store with large freezers or a gas station. Maybe it just lumbers along and that gets it excellent long term reliability and respectable "MPG" IDK. Good luck with it!

We have a three year old Generac V8 natural gas generator has been failing its Tuesday morning test run for the last year. First the no starts only happened on below freezing blaming low gas pressure..Fixed that no no starts on any Tuesday morning test run. Past my pay grade I just change the oil and filter once a year and manually start after failed start to reset alarm. Going with OE GM filter and 5/30 syn what ever Napa has on sale

I’ve had the HPL premium plus 0W-30 and premium guard EX filter on there for 14 months now. It has only run for about 20 hours in that time. So far so good, oil level is steady. I will probably leave it for another year and change it next May.
