Ford says a big EV related announcement is coming August 11th. New models and platforms it sounds like šŸ‘

ā€œSpeaking on an earnings call on July 30, Farley revealed to investors that the company is planning to announce a new EV strategy in August, which will help position the brand against competition from Chinese automakers.ā€

ā€œOn Aug. 11, that will be a big day for all of us at Ford," Farley said on the call. "We will be in Kentucky to share more about our plans to design and build a breakthrough electric vehicle and a platform in the U.S. This is a Model-T moment for us at Ford. A chance to bring a new family of vehicles to the world that offer incredible technology, efficiency, space, and features.ā€

Hopefully there's a smallish car-shaped thing in the mix.
I hope so. So far all the smaller cars haven't had great ranges. I think @JeffKeryk is right though, a properly sized normal looking crossover/SUV would be the best seller, especially one that doesn't have a name stolen from the past that riles up people like the Mustang Mach-E.

Hopefully they aren't looking past hydrogen.
If you can show me the future in that as stations close down, I'm all ears. It's power intensive to produce, difficult to keep contained, and expensive to fuel. You might be interested to read the issues people have had fueling Toyota Mirais. The stations use staging tanks to raise the pressure to fully fuel vehicles and busy stations sometimes don't retain enough pressure to get a full tank.

It needs to be a entire platform that can spawn multiple models, similar to what GM has done. Automakers need sufficient scale to generate profits.
People are buying SUVs. GM does not make any profit on their EV business.
I am rooting for Ford, and GM, to build and sell profitable EVs.
Currently the top selling non-truck vehicles in the US are RAV4, CR-V and Model Y.

If Ford wants to announce they’re just finishing up on ideas, more power to them. But why announce ā€œPLANS to designā€? Nobody cares about plans, they care about products, and how closely that product aligns with what they were promised.

I certainly wish Ford the best; I’ve owned more Fords than any other brand over the years, but… the Model T went further on a tank of gas than the standard-range Mach-E would go on a full charge in winter. Considering it’s been well over 100 years since the T, they should pick better comparisons.

Like "Mustang Mach"? Oh yeah, they already tried that... Just kidding!

I watched the electric trucker episode with the hydrogen semi. It definitely works, and has more range than electric. They have 350 bar and 700 bar standards for the hydrogen. But the thing is, it still essentially is an electric truck. It still has an electric transaxle, power control, and regeneration. It still has two small lithium pony batteries that it drives on, and the hydrogen fuel cell just recharges those batteries. So, you have all the electric truck hardware, but then you add in 700 bar hydrogen tanks, hydrogen fuel cells, and all the safety and refueling paraphenalia...and you could replace the weight and bulk of those tanks and fuel cells with more batteries, and just have a standard electric truck. Yeah, the hydrogen one goes 600km without refueling, and the electric ones only go 300 or 400km. But unless you are teaming, that kind of range is rare, and standard CCS chargers adds 300+ miles per hour of charging. Maybe hydrogen has a role, if you absolutely have to be green and need more range. But what I don't understand is, why not more effort creating green hydrocarbon fuels like biodiesels, if being green and having long range is really so important. Or just deploy megawatt charging, which is in the works, so you can add 400 miles of range in 20 minutes.

Btw I’m tired of all this ā€œre-imaginingā€ crap… why can’t kids these days come up with their own ideas? šŸ˜‚

It's hard to get consumers' attention these days. Much easier to leverage existing branding than to try and build name recognition for a new brand. That why we have so many film spinoffs and vehicles that are rehashes or reintroductions of older names. The Integra, the Prelude, a Silverado EV that looks like the Avalanche, a Mustang Mach E that isn't a Mustang.
