Back in the day, what was your dad's go to oil?

As far back as I can remember dad was a fan of Pennzoil. To this day it's what he almost always uses, and he is 77 now.

I'm a 1st generation oil changing. Mechanical wasn't was Dad's specialty. When my first (used) car needed an oil change, I remember not getting up early on a Saturday, so when I went to the place at Noon, I was told it was a five hour wait. JCPenney auto service.

Instead of hearing my dad yell, I purchase Pennzoil in the paper can, a filter, filter wrench, drain pan and five quarts of oil. Set me back about $20 (or 7x minimum wage) and twice the amount of the service oil change. But I never looked back after that.

Pennzoil in the CAN. And QS with Slick 50. He still has some of those bottles on the auto shelf at home.

My dad was a Castrol GTX guy. He went to a quick lube once, I think they advertised Valvoline, and the car made weird noises after that, which he attributed to the oil change. He changed it back to GTX and it was all good again. Probably not the real issue, but he's used GTX whenever possible ever since. I've moved over to M1 because it's cheap with rebates and I've given some to my dad, and he'll happily use it now. I don't think he cares as much now.

My father-in-law swore by Valvoline white bottle oil. I don't remember what weight--he likely used whatever weight was recommended. He always said it was the best and that Pennzoil and Quaker State were [censored] (wax!). :-)

RIP Tim!

Kendall 10W-30 - Im pretty sure was the first 10w-30 on the market.

Grandpa also ran Kendall in sprint car engines because it had the best anti foam properties in the day.

In the 60's and 70's it was GTX 20w-50 by the case from the parts store, Delo 15w-40 by the 5 gal tub from the guys that service heavy equipment on site at night and Fire&Ice 10w-40 by the quart from Sears.

I always saw Havoline in the 50s and then in the 60s on it was either Amalie PRO or Pennzoil.
The Amalie was what he got free for running their decal on our drag car.We drained it every week and used it in all of our cars.
Fram orange filters on everything.

For my dad and me it was always Mobil Super 10W40. IIRC correctly I stopped using it mid 90s or so and moved to synthetics as did he.

Until that day when after a change on a Dart, the oil was pumped out of the canister filter from a pinched o-ring.
Times were a little tougher then, he picked up another o-ring and 5 quarts of Royal Triton. I remember the price tag, .29 a quart at Venture.
Dad and Grandpa would discuss often his love for Valvoline, and Grandpa's love of Pennzoil.

I used Royal Triton for a while in the late 60's and early 70's. Dad used Valvoline for several years.
