anyone started trying to save gas?

And on top of buying diesel fuel a subset also need to buy DEF. About $15 for 2.5 gallon jug.
None of my vehicles need DEF. There’s sufficient supply of these great vehicles to not be a concern for the next 20 years.

The question of how far does a tank of DEF go is a good one. I have no clue.

I found it idiotic how fast people drove before gas spiked.

I find it dumber now. Supposed value of time in the car or not… speed and power are a cubic relation.

Apparently gas isn’t really expensive because I don’t see people slowing down. An I’m not talking doing 40 on the interstate…. But 80+ in a 65 is a bit much, regardless of how good of drivers folks think they are and how entitled they think they are to do so.
It is easier to be mad about something and blame others than to actually do something about it.

I hear a lot of talk about cutting back but I sure don't see it. I have one brother who just completed a round-trip drive between NW OH and Pampa TX and makes frequent trips to Detroit. The other brother makes regular drives between NE OK and NE IN. He also just drove from OK to MD and flew back. He says in a few months he and the wife will be flying back to MD and then driving back to OK. We'll see.

It’s funny the talk of saving and making “life altering changes”. In my village there are still diesel pickups, suburban, etc running around daily. I walk most places especially local park near me.

I never measured exactly but I would guess a gallon of DEF gets me 1000 miles at 20 mpg. In NY I could easily get DEF at a pump and pump in what it took to fill it. And I would know how my gallons. So far in DELAWARE I wait until it says 'DEF less than half full" and add a full 2.5 gallon jug.

Well what’s the alternative, flying?

If one has the money, going isn’t the issue. the cost increase from fuel, per mile, is not that terribly much.

I have a 106 mile daily commute, almost all highway.
So far I have done the following. 63 in a 65 during the day, 55 in a 65 at night (2nd shift) No traffic, endangering no one.
Parked my Buick LeSabre that needs A/C repairs and am driving a 4cyl Camry that I got for a bargain from family with good cold air.
Mapped out a more efficient route which shaves off 12 miles total. So I managed to go from refueling every 4 days, to at the end of the day Friday or even Saturday out of the same 18.5 gal tank. All shopping is done on the way to work, without doing more than getting off the highway which is in sight of where I wish to shop.
The exception to that is refrigerated grocery items. Hoping to be able to work remote FT soon, just not possible yet where I am.
The wife already cut back on cable, streaming services. It is a good start, I think.

I don't drive or ride or fly in moderation so gas equals joy at any price... I just don't want to be alive when the oil fields start to dry up... at that time you might think $7 a Gal gas is a real bargain... its all relative...

Not really, but we don’t do much besides work. We hardly go out nowadays aside to visit family.

My wife was wanting to cancel a few road trips this summer, but I told her you have to look at the difference of say $3 a gallon gas compared to $5 to justify it.

1000 mile round trip. 18 mpg in our Yoda. $3 vs $5 gas. It’s a $110 difference. I’m being very negative with that $3 too because that’s relative. When was it last $3? It was pushing $4 when we bought the truck. Say it’s $4 vs $5. The gap is smaller at a $55 difference.

I’m not saying gas isn’t high because that would be false. I’m just using this to justify a family trip. My cost of living is definitely higher now than it was a year ago. Much higher than it was 2 or 3 years ago too. Anyone who says gas prices dont affect them is completely out of touch with reality.

No more pleasure drives for now. Grass grows a little longer now between cuts and errand runs do not get done unless I have two or more errands to run. I doubt I will be changing oil this year because of the few miles driven so far.

I still go fishing once a week and its a 270 mile round trip each time. I do store my boat 3 miles from the Missouri River and I don't have to tow it from home to the river. I figure if I have the truck, the boat, licenses on the boat and vehicles the extra gas cost is minimal. It's the fishing rods, tackle, life jackets, fish finders and accessories and repairs that cost much more than the gas. I do not drive the Corvette around aimlessly as much as I used to however I will rack up miles on it just because it's fun. I try to limit some shopping trips and cruises however I will not stop having fun because of the price of gasoline. I have a couple long Corvette events my wife and I are attending this summer, maybe 3 events. I just tell my wife not to buy that pair of shoes and a purse she doesn't need and it pays for the gas. hahahahaha :p

I was never wasteful and weirdly I never had a problem paying for cars but don't like paying for gas.
Same way with new hvac systems.

I fear the price of home heating oil right now but have a hybrid system and will use that as long as possible.

Yesterday I bought regular gas for my zt.. It cost $60 to fill it up and I thought Sunoco at $4.93 a gallon was a steal...lol

But I do conserve and have cut back a bit.

You are reminding me that my pellet furnace needs to be repaired over the summer, need a new full auger , driver, cup assy and driver and a sensor

with gas prices soaring and no end in sight, the trickle down effect is straining budgets for many of us. myself included. have any of you started to cut back on your trips or in other ways? without getting political, what are some of the things you are doing to save?

prices here range from 4.89 to 5.39 depending on where you are in the county. ive started to consolidate my trips. im also looking at sales at the grocery store & buying store brands when i can. cutting out stuff i dont have to have. keeping netflix & canceling hulu. making changes to my auto insurance to state minimums while keeping full coverage. downgrading my satellite tv package to eliminate premium channels. small changes can add up pretty quick. if things keep getting worse ill have to eliminate some services all together, such as saying bye bye to directv.

the economists on Bloomberg & CNBC warn of a pretty rough summer (likely recession) into early 2023.
Never had to start as I generally drive pretty efficiently.

Maybe fewer trips. But I did feel the need for a frozen custard last night after my Father's Day ribeye, so I did go out to the custard stand for a treat.

But then I drive a $10k "beater" and after 5 years, fuel is still only about 75% of the cost of buying the vehicle and about 35-40% of the overall operating costs.

You get one life period. When your old, sitting in the rocking chair on the patio looking out in the distance, are you going to say you experienced life to the fullest or are you going to have regrets?!

I will not be living with regrets regardless of the current situation.
No, but my gene pool tends to live to 90+ so I don't want to be 70 and eating dogfood.
I'll enjoy, but still look to have something in what is likely a long future.
If not, my kids will be well set after I pass.
