Anyone here drive an older car & doesnt care?

I don't care. Cars lose money from day 1, would rather have the money invested. My work peers and business associates all have 50k cars, spend $30 a day parking in Downtown Boston and Cambridge. My car's at the Wellington station parking lot, I take the orange line subway into Boston. Other times I park right at a meter downtown, cars bumping off and scraping all day. Way it goes. Good money, horrible on cars. I let them drive, fine with me. Then every so often the tears. "My car has a door ding, and I parked it 1/4 mile away". shuddup.

With big corporations you would be lucky to even get the name of the big person or HR lead over the phone, let alone get to see them in person. Im not saying it does not work but todays world is much different than 10 years ago. If you can get it to work, great, youre lucky.

Most places are hard enough as is to get the contact of the person hiring or guy at the top. Companies now are going through a tougher and more thorough screening process than ever before. How do I know? Cause in 2009 and 2010 I was a heavy networker and Ive taken this route (as requested by my career coach) to get contacts and get ahead of the rest of the pack by getting in touch directly with the HR person. I did this, not just to find a job but firstly and most importantly gain a contact and make myself marketable out there. Its not as easy as it sounds. A lot of the companies wouldnt even give out the name to me. Thats why you see so many job ads "no phone calls please"

Im gonna cry

Its so important to follow up on every application you submit for somebody to even notice it. If your plan of finding a job is sitting at your computer and submitting 100's of applications a week, you'll probably be unemployed until you're 60. Instead of mass online applying, pursue each application like it's the last one available anywhere. And leave this new car non sense behind, get a job and stop leeching off your parents. And I'll leave you with a quote. "“When you want to succeed as bad you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful."

If I had the faith to be able to get contacts and get in touch with the person directly and see them in person I would do it but I just feel so hopeless and unwanted.

Im not trying to make excuses, im just going by my past experiences. Ive done the looking for a job and applying on foot and go in person, but I gained absolutely nothing from it. Only a huge waste of time, so thats why I resorted to emailing my resumes.

A lot of postings now online, dont even post the [censored] company name! How is someone even suppose to take a step forward and get in touch with them?

If 99% of resumes online submission dont even get looked at then thats not very fair to the canidates. These companies shouldnt even be posting jobs online if theyre not gonna look at them.

My 18 yo son is on his second job. Promoted to asst manager. He was willing to do grunt work, now hes close to managing a store by himself. I opened the car door, said go in and ask for a job. That was it. Took 2 days.

Unlike some of his friends who are waiting for this "perfect job" with "lots of money". They dont want to do grunt work. Mommy and daddy gave them everything, they dont want to work. Dont want to get their hands dirty. cant stop texting. They dont know how to work. Don't know how to look for a job. Instead of having some money and a decent car, they have no money, no car. And they thought my son was going to drive them around. Always calling for rides. "Um..sorry Joe, he's at work. ..oh.." In the fall hes off to a local college and continuing to work that job. This "grunt" job is willing to pay for part of the tuition if he stays 2 years after.

To get my degree in computer science which led to a career in IT, I spent 5 years painting cars and smoothing out Bondo in a used car sweat shop. Horrible job. They started drinking at 2. I had to finish everything. But I made enough money to get 2 years in, then get a job at a computer company, finish my degree.

I passed the grunt work concept onto my son. Let him realize how valuable a degree is. Let him earn and spend his own money, appreciate what things cost.

Kids today are soft, the parents are to blame.

No one said it was easy. Yes, this is 2012, and I work two jobs, and I am close to 50, one of the hardest to employ age groups.... Some of my days of the week are in excess of 16 hours long. And no, I am not applying or working for Microsoft, either. I took lesser paying, but full time jobs and worked my way up, not applying for the company president and then looking like Eeyore with my head down (like your postings and self-description seem to emulate), then wondering why I can't get anyone to look at my resume. And while volunteer work is admirable, you could better spend your time looking at local stores like Wal-Mart or other such stores in your area just to get something with a paycheck. After all you gotta start somewhere. So while you may call my last post here an insult, I call it a reality check.

Putting things in perspective..

Canada unemployment rate: 7.2%
United States: 8.2%

92.8% of Canadians that want to work found a job.
Out of 100 people, 7 aren't working. Your one of them.

carnoobie ill probably get a hand slap for saying this but dangit you need it. i dont give a rats behind what you or you job coach think! i think you need to get off your lazy whining behind and get a job. yes its hard but do it. and no i wasnt lucky i had a son to feed!!!!! and unlike so many others i didnt go jump on the welfare bandwagon! i had a son who needed fed and clothed so having no job wasnt an option. and while i was out of work i did every side job i could get my hands on. shoveling snow cutting grass fixing cars handy man stuff. i did anything i could. i still take a side job when i get one for the extra money. there is money to be made if your willing. its not just you who needs help your parents do to they should kick you to the curb. everyone needs help and thats fine but come on!! your priorities are more screwed then a 3 legged seeing eye dog!! listen i really dont want to hear one more ounce of baby [censored]! i want you to wake up tomorrow by 8am and go apply at every single business you find. gas stations factories restaurants everything. make a goal of atleast applying to 20 places. then the next day call them all and follow up. then do it again the next day and the next by thursday go apply for more jobs and repeat process. you will eventually find something. when you go in dress nice maybe not suit in tie but khakis and a button up TUCKED IN shirt!! try walmart they are always hiring dont be picky just do whatever you get offered and be darn glad you got it. no more excuses or whining . just do it!! if your sisters can make you pay 45 bucks for dinner then i should be able to pester you enough to follow my advice. and listen im not trying to be harsh. i really care your on bitog and we are all a big family in my book. your having a rough patch and have some low self asteem. finding a job will help your self esteem. go out ther and do it and be proud. it can be done. seriously i dont want to hear anything besides yes sir or ok. no [censored]!! none zero. its old and tiring .

Carnoobie stop acting like a women, obviousely your setting your goals to high, waiting for a perfect job. Get two jobs, there's nothing wrong with working at a supermarket/Walmart and working as a waiter. The best thing that could happen to you is your parents should give you a deadline, then throw you out. I'm sure there fantastic people but they share some of the blame for how cuddled you are. They don't call it tough love for nothing.

Hmmm. I work since I turned 16. Got hired on my B-day.
Was laid off once for 2 month due to season. And every time my job got better and better. Started as milkshake maker/oil monkey 8 years ago, now project analyst in big global IT corp.
Maybe you should try/work harder, change attitude?
"For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened."
It takes time and effort. Just don't give up...

I am a bit late to this party, but I did read every post here (I believe).

I think the OP should join the military. I can't believe that hasn't been mentioned. Learn a trade, contribute to the greater good, and if you ever want to work in the public sector, you will have Veteran status. I thought I was going to end up being a teacher, and wanted to do the Army National Guard for adventure. The Army ended up changing my life, and I ended up in federal law enforcement. You could similarly find a great direction in life, pick up some priceless skills, and make lifelong friends.

And if you are 31 years old and still play video games...wow, I think you need the kind of professional help that is far beyond the scope of an internet forum!

From all of the evidence you have presented...as someone else said a few posts ago...it is clear that you can not deal with reality. I am the eternal optimist, however, and rather than insult you, this is my "tough love" post to you...get off of your butt and make something of yourself-- you will not regret it. Some day you will look back on whatever path you choose, and be quite pleased...

Seriously? 12 pages of posting for this????

Bob Is Therapy Online Group

Problem is there are millions more like this guy out there, complaining, excusing, committed to online advice for EVERYTHING.
Wow he sold his xbox, that's outstanding.

I could care less about tough love and all that, get a life. I'm 56 and I've worked since I was 14, I've got ZERO respect for this. Like a lot of people not on your facebook page I've worked 2 jobs, long hours, and supported a family and with my HARD EARNED TAXES a lot of grown up kids playing video games. And if you don't like what I've written, then don't post up whining about what the other guy has and how "bad" you have it.

They wont take him at 31. And judging by the writing, he'd be gone day 1 of basic anyways. Our modern military wont take anyone as it did before. A week after Sept 11, 2001 I went with some colleagues to a local recruiter to sign up for service. At the time I was 33, worked out every day, ran 5 miles, no health issues. IT background. First thing they asked was my age. I was too old, thanks, but no thanks. My colleagues that were 23 and 25 and were taken. Both couldn't make it past basic. Computer nerds, I was in better shape than them. So, none of us made it. They are looking for HS grads and early 20's. He's a decade too late.

I know for the US it used to be 17 to 34. He is from Canada so wasn't sure what they have for ages. Just that the guy was surprised it wasn't mentioned before, and It was on 'Noob's earlier two threads.

Doh! Your right.

Which makes it even harder. Active personnel for Canadian armed forces is 68,250 Ranked 56th in the world for size. They have us, so they don't need much.

Why does that statement make you angry? Are you one of the 8 (US) too?

Maybe we need to be a little easier on Carnoobie. Note his location from Canada, so his career choices are limited to :

1. Ice Road Trucker at Yellowknife (Ice Road Truckers) 2. Load DC-3 airplanes at Buffalo Airways at Yellowknife or Hay River (Ice Pilots) 3. Natural gas driller at Nabors or MGM (Cold Diggers).

Ok. Sarcasm over.

I have to admit, these threads are more entertaining than the usual Pennzoil Ultra pds infinite-loop. However, based on Carnoobie's posts about only working occasionally as an office temp for several years, his resume would certainly be a "red flag" for any corporate office and possibly also for Walmart or StopNShop. His work history makes him appear to be a "professional" unemployment collector (work just long enough to collect unemployment, submit a bunch of resumes online as required by long-term unemployment...)
I hope Carnoobie will prove me wrong and tell us about his new full-time job.
