Anyone a mattress expert?

On the East coast their is a company called the Original Mattress Factory. All of our beds are from there. They are not only the best quality but cheaper than the Serta,Simmons,Stearns and Foster always on sale stuff.
In the stores they have their competitors mattresses cut open to see what's in there. The inner springs in the cut open models were pretty flimsy looking for a mattress twice the price of what they were selling. You can watch your bed being made if you want to.

Our King size is 9 years old and as new in all ways.I have sent dozens of co-workers there with never a complaint.

Really appreciate this thread all!!!

Fiancee and I are looking to buy a new "standard" mattress (king size) and the various brands and prices are bewildering.....Sounds like the "thing" to do, is not to spend mucho dollars, realisticaly expect it to last 5 yrs or so, and then replace

Umm..err..."intimate encounters" are different though. Memory foam is temperature responsive and additional heat causes it to soften a bit. Some are sensitive to this. On the plus side, there is no bounce - all your efforts are put to good use and the mattress tends to engulf and keep your partner in place.

Maybe I said too much...

Hope I dont offend - just food for thought. I think they are well worth it, but beds are so individual that you will have to try them out for yourself.

What a selling point. I'd like to know how I can try this out in the store!

My folks have an 18 year old S&F that has served them well. But S&F is just Sealy's luxury brand and in all the research I've been doing, all the "S" brands stink. Due to increases in cost of materials (e.g. in foam), to maintain price points, manufacturers of innerspring mattresses are using lower quality materials. The results are mattresses that don't last as long and manufacturers are stingy with warranties. I've read where a manufacturer may offer a 10 year warranty but at the same time recommends replacing your mattress set every 5 to 6 years.

I have had the exact same problem over the years, Simmons and the like all [censored] and all wallow out quickly.

"Denver Mattress Company" Upper end products have held up the best for me.

Try to avoid soft, plush or pillow top mattresses. If they are to firm just add some memory foam as it sounds like you might be considering to do.

If you want high quality memory foam at good prices I highly recommend this eBay seller. Suggest do not go with any thing less than 3" as this is a nice amount, 2" just doesn't seam very thick unless your mattress was soft or plush to begin with.

Good Luck!

Return us the favor and let us know when you actually do something and how it turns out as I believe many of us here know exactly what you are talking about.

I have a Doctor's Choice plush from Denver mattress, and it's been fairly decent. It's starting to get the sag after 5 years, but it's still comfortable and I don't have nearly the back pain I did with the Sealy. That thing was done after about 3 years.

From my own research, plush is the best alternative to firm, soft, or pillow top.

My parents have about a 15 year old Simmons pillow top Beauty Rest and it's still in great shape without any sagging or support issues.

OP Update: We pulled the trigger on a Sleep Number bed. Specifically, the Classic Series Special Edition model. It was on sale. They say it normally costs $1900 but it’s not really any different than their Classic Series c4 model which runs $1600. We got it for $1350 so it is a savings either way. They were also running a free shipping promotion this weekend which saved us an additional $60. Total price with Michigan 6% sales tax was $1431.

Let us know how it works out. My next bed will likely be an air bed, but even with them, I've read horror stories of pumps failing and bleed valves leaking. How long is the warranty?

Good choice on the sleep number. Lets us know how it feels in a couple of months

oilBabe and I really love our Sleep Number bed. We've had it for three years now. The only problem we've had is the display is corrupt on the remote.

The warranty is pro-rated:

Quote:

Years After Original Purchase Date Original Purchaser's Cost
Up to 2 years No Cost
2-20 years 20% plus 4% of price for each year from original purchase date.
