Amsoil HDD in 04 Corolla?

The "perfect" oil in this application ? HARDLY !! Yes, it's a very stout oil, and we use it is several applications, but they're FAR from an 04 Corolla. If you REALLY wanted to give a good "professional" recommendation instead of the BULLPIE that's being bantied about, you'd recommend ANY of the other Amsoil 5W30 oils. In fact, Mobil !'s 5W30 would be better.

Now that's not what I wrote is it? I wrote "HDD is the PERFECT oil in this engine going 12K-20K miles oci's and beyond"

Unlike most people on BITOG I try to actually answer the questions posted. Naturally if I thought there was something wrong I would give my recommendation as necessary. You are right, much "bullpie" is bandied about. I do my best to keep it to a minimum. You post "Mobil 1 would be better", with absolutely zero facts backing that statement. And I'm the one with "prejudice". As I said, your opinion is fine.
 
Not by any stretch of the imagination but i don't proclaim to be unlike some others.
I do trust Mobil, Shell, Amsoil etc though because they make the stuff.

How old are you 14?

Once again how do you come up to these conclusions?

Slightly thicker to counter mechanical and fuel shearing over a long OCI, and possible conditions that might come up.

Slightly stronger add-pack with high Ca detergent, and higher ZN/Ph to counter wear. HDD will hold it's TBN longer than ASM will over a 12k+ OCI.

A stouter base-oil blend with lower NOAK to reduce oil consumption from evaporative loss over a long OCI.

HDD is a 'stronger' oil than ASM, pure and simple, CATERHAM, and you CAN'T deny that - it's fact.

addguy, no offence but the question was directed to the Asmoil dealer for a reason.
But since you chimbed in, ASM is already thicker than spec' and very shear resistant and is a long drain oil so HDD offers no advantage there.
The higher ZDDP content is not required and will just potentially shorten Cat' life.
The OP's car is not using even half a qt of oil in 12,000 miles so what oil consumption issue are you trying to fix?

Clearly the case you're making for HDD is fallacious for this application motivated by an irrational thick oil biase and an admitted disregard for the science of lubrication efficiency.

The HDD is a near 40 grade oil marketed for diesel applications. Completely unnecessary for the OP's application.

I put 250k on a 1980 wagon and there was no problem what so ever the engine always ran like a top. I finally gave it to charity and it's problally still running. I ran valvoline and castrol gtx with 3k oil changes.

ASM 0W-20 is not "thicker than spec".

You know it's heavier than spec'.
The HTHSV for TGMO 0W-20 is 2.6cP. ASM 0W-20 has a HTHSV of 2.8cP, the highest of any 0W-20 on the market.

No kidding, since when did Toyota 0w20 oil become a standard for all other 0w20 oils to be measured against?
Oh I know it must be all those incredible things reported lately that happen to engines once this wonder oil is poured in, like 5% increases in fuel economy, "way less friction" and more horse power.

I have no doubt that this oil is stout, and I would like to see how it performs in my engine during winter, but let’s not get carried away.

It cant be true! Thats the same a saying the Toyota holy water is inferior to something else, its never going to happen.

Trav, believe it or not I am going to help you out.

There is no doubt in my mind that TGMO 0W20 is a high quality lube. But how does it over come the higher viscosity it has to comparable 0W20's. used oil analysis have shown it has a higher viscosity. VI's must be working hard to sustain the FE benefits that this oil supposed to have.

Hi Nesser and welcome to BITOG!

It's a good question.
Put simply, HTHSV is best thought of as an accurate measure of how thick or thin an oil is in an operating engine.
As you mentioned 2.6cP is the minimum viscosity for a 20wt oil and their is no maximum which is a flaw in the current SAE grading system. The minimum viscosity for a 30wt oil is 2.9cP again with no maximum. It would be logical to assume that the SAE 20 grade would have a HTHSV range from 2.6cP to 2.89cP and in fact all API 20wt oils fall into that range.
As it turns out most 20wt oils are clustered at the light end of the 20wt spectrum with a HTHSV of 2.6cP and without exception when a 20wt oil is specified my an OEM it has a HTHSV of 2.6cP.

A higher HTHSV value for an oil has nothing to do with base oil quality per se, but a high HTHSV relative to the KV100 spec for an oil can only be acheived through the use of higher quality GP IV and GP V base oils. The best indicator of base oil quality is it's NOACK percentage and and it's natural VI. The following thread on the relationship between HTHSV and KV100 may be helpful:

If you are comparing finished oils, one should first have a HTHSV value in mind as that viscosity is what largely equates to operational viscosity in an engine. Next one will consider the VI of the oil. The higher the better but there can be tradeoffs.
High VI oils use lighter base oil stocks which tend to have higher NOACK percentages and ofcourse use polymer thickeners. The quality of the polymer thickeners used has to be considered if the oil is going to have acceptable shear stability in the final product.

You misunderstood my reply. I have no idea but the guy was asking a question that made Toyat's w20 look worse than Amsoils i guess.
I said i hope you have a good flame suit asking that question about the all mighty Toyota oil.

Personally i would put it in my oil can for door hinges but thats just me.
