I have been running Amsoil ATM 10W30 in my Jeep 4.0 because it seems to run smoother with the near 40 weight oil. Now the new stuff down to 10.5 cst, what would the next best grade of Amsoil be, 10W40? The 0w30 and the HDD 5W30 are a little to pricey for me. I would have bought the ACD 10W30/30 last time I bought oil just it was thinner than I really wanted for my nearly 100,000 mile Jeep.

Maybe I could mix the 10W30 with 10W40 50/50. Is the 10W40 going to be new and improved too?

In terms of high temp, high shear viscosity, the new stuff is about the same. So I'd stick with the Amsoil 10w-30 and see how that does....

If you decide to go thicker, the 10w-40 would be an excellent choice....

The new SAE30/10W-30 is less expensive than the Amsoil 10W-30 and has a 100*C vis of 10.9. But the (old) Amsoil HDEO 15W-40 is no more thick than the (old) Amsoil 10W-40, as follows:

10W-40 14.9 @ 100*C, 90.5 @ 40*C, HT/HS 4.3
15W-40 14.3 @ 100*C, 90.2 @ 40*C, HT/HS >4.1

Both "pour" to around 50 below. Interesting to see if the 15W-40 will also be reformulated. The 15W-40 is less expensive than the SAE30, and the 10W-30 and 10W-40.

I'd also consider the new 10w-30, 4-Stroke Marine oil (WCT), which has a HT/HS viscosity of 3.64 Cp and a Noack volatility of only 4.76%! It also has a VI of only 154, so I don't think they are using any polymeric thickener in it.

Even though these specialty products are targeted at certain markets, they can certainly be used for different applications....

The 5w-40/10w-40 can be used interchangably and even the 15w-40 now meets the ACEA A3/B3 specifications for Hp gas engines.

One thing for sure - I believe the son and new management at Amsoil actually are listening to the customer if all the new products and changes are any indication.

Al Sr. even though he is a rich s oh B, really hamstrung growth and customer love with his stubbornness.

TS - do you really think the new MC oil has Mo?

Radical change on the visc. of ATM. The original viscosity is why I used it.

Probably won't use the new stuff.

That's funny.. I am more open to trying this oil due to the viscosity changes and a suspicion that it is actually an improvement over the old stuff concerning viscosity stability. I will be watching reports closely.

Oils get better not worse. I don't worry so much about 1 or 2 cst differences. A well formulated oil is what it comes down too. If it meets the specs, thats all that matters. IMO.

Recent batch data:

TSO, Noack 7.6%, HT/HS of 3.3 Cp, VI of 187
ASL, Noack 6.7%, HT/HS of 3.2 Cp, VI of 180
ATM, Noack 5.4%, HT/HS of 3.2 Cp, VI of 171
HDD, Noack 6.5%, HT/HS of 3.6 Cp, VI of 170

So TSO/ASL/ATM are now ACEA, "A5/B5" and VW "503.00" type formulations and HDD continues to be A3/B4....

FWIW,I suspect the main reason why these xw-30 oils are now formulated a bit thinner is to meet the "energy conserving" requirements of ILSAC/GF-4 and API/SM. It would not have been possible to do this with the previous 11.5-12.0 Cst, ACEA A3/B4 formulations....

All the newer Domestic & Asian models under warranty require a GF-4 and/or API/SM type oil. So this was an easy decision to make....

I personally never had an issue with 1 or 2 cSt differences or .2 of a difference in HT/HS so I'm not dissapointed. We've seen with modern engines that 20wt oils are doing quite well with HT/HS #'s of 2.6. Molekule has stated this awhile ago that engines can run on low viscosity oils. It's the quality of the formulation that counts IMO. Redline's oils are extremely shear stable simply bc they are a racing oil company first, extended drain oil second.

Absolutely nothing wrong with those numbers..

OK, and the new no-VII ACD (30/10W-30) carries an HT/HS of 3.4, Noack 6.3%, with ACEA A3,B3,E3,E5. VI=141. And thicker at 10.9 @ 100*C. Hey, its cheaper than any of those above! Will be looking for some UOAs on it.

Is there more than one Jr in Al's family. The son I met is an emergency room doctor in El Centro, California. And is Al really going to retire?

jbas,

The new 10w-30 (ACD) is fine for use in gas engines and does meet the ACEA, A3/B3 specs as you noted. Amsoil recommends you use oil analysis to determine a conservative drain interval for each particular application. The recommended drain interval for automotive or light truck diesels is 25,000 miles/1 year, with regular filter changes. So this is clearly a very robust formulation.

I've had excellent results with the Series 3000, 5w-30 and the 15w-40 in gas engines. I see no reason why the very shear stable ACD formulation would work well also. The only caveat is that the low temp pumpability isn't as good as ASL and ATM.

One is enough.

....regarding these new lower viscosity Amsoil oils, thin is in and it's not changing. Demand for robust low viscosity low SAP oils is going global.

His son Alan and son in law, Dean Alexander are basically running much of the day to day operations now. One of the guys from Lubrication Engineers (LE) (Kevin Dinwiddle), is now in charge of their powertrain fluid (gear lube, atf) development and is responsible for the new gear lube and syncromesh fluids.

I think Amsoil has been much more responsive in responding to market trends in the past 1-2 years.
I expect to see their filters upgraded in the near future and go to the Donaldson nanotechnology design.

For ACEA A3 requirments, you'll have to now use the 5w-40 or Series 3000 5w-30 oil.

He has been married more than once so he could have several children. I thought he had 2 sons and 1 daughter in the business with the daughter running ALtrum division.
