I would not change a thing. That's outstanding. Whatever you have been using - filter included, don't change a thing.

I would. Since the OP's is into long drains I'd recommend the ASM 0W-20 which is a long drain oil. It's a heavy 20wt, not that much lighter than the AZO 0w30 he's using now.

You can run HDD. Your engine won't explode, your mileage won't change, your wear won't suddenly go through the roof and certainly the chickens won't come home to roost. Or you can run AZO, ASM, etc - some guys take the thin oil thing a bit too deeply. The car is 8 years old, run HDD 5w30 (it's not 20W-50) with confidence.

I have to agree, your results are outstanding, keep using what got you to the dance in the first place.

2006 Toyota Corolla ~ 109000mi - AMSOIL HDD (4-6 oz. added during OCI) / EaO34 (yes, it fits) / 12-15,000 mile OCI / Las Vegas, NV with occasional trips to CA / 60% hwy - 40% stop and go / speeds up to 80 mph with cruise / 30-36 mpg

No Worries.

FYI Here is the Back spec chart.

No and it won't explode if he runs the cheapest 5w20 conventional either although he will get better mileage. So if you're suggesting not being particular about his choice of motor oil including optimizing the viscosity, why even bother considering Amsoil unless one likes throwing money away?

I'm merely suggesting the HDD will be a great long drain oil. Not sure why you are twisting it so much.

Because I wanted to answer his question.

"Amsoil HDD in 04 Corolla?"

Thank Pablo. I'm thinking about running HDD for summer season and then switch back to 0w30 in winter. I'm doing about 14,000 to 18,000 miles/6 months. I'm driving in a lot of dirty road, stop and go, so here his why i'm not extending more then 15,000 miles.

IMO, skip the HDD and use their Euro 5w30...

Just a thought...

...also, no harm in ASM in the winter and AZO in the summer, again...JMO.

The thought of HDD in your engine...Euro is at least sexy. The HDD is like beast mode for no reason.

Do the 15K with confidence. Thanks.

Amen to that!

CATERHAM, seriously, you've got to lighten up on this thin oil thing.

There will not be any real operating difference - temp, mileage,..anything, between running HDD and running a 20-weight.

You go on about better start-up flow, better mileage...but on an older car, SO MANY things affect them that you really can't measure the difference between the two.

I know you want to think you can, but in the real world, you can't.

The answer to his question is: Yes. HDD is ok in the Corolla.

What can I say, I guess ignorance is bliss.
Install an oil pressure gauge and then tell me there is no difference between a 3.5cP oil almost 40wt oil and a typical 2.6cP oil and even to the heavy 2.8cP 20wt Amsoil ASM 0W-20.
Or simply compare their PDS viscosity spec's.
But I'll summarize it for you.
HDD is 50% heavier than ASM even at room temperture and ASM is almost a 30wt oil.
Comparing HDD to the spec' Toyota 0W-20, it's 80% heavier at room temp's and a whopping 170% at 0C.
Will this translate in a noticeable difference in engine performance and fuel economy? Yeh I think so, but if you want to ignor the facts, who am I to stop you.

What does meeting minimum oil pressure specifications tell you about the suitability of the oil viscosity wise for lubricating non-pressure lubricated parts of the engine? The cam-lifter interface, timing chains, timing gears, wrist pins(many engines), and ring-cylinder interface being examples.

My oil pressure reference was to high-light the fact that in running an almost two grades heavier than specified will be become obviously a less than ideal choice. He will not likely be able to use maximum rev's at any time without the oil pump going into by-pass mode. Consiquently running the heavy HDD will be counter-productive.

HDD is a very good shear resistant long drain oil. Unfortunately this is the wrong application. Of course the engine will run on it but that shouldn't be the point. With the exception of the oil's long drain capability, the lubrication needs of his engine would be better met with the cheapest API 5w20 conventional.
