Amsoil HDD in 04 Corolla?

Time has come for oil change on my 04 Corolla.
I'm usually running Amsoil AZO 0w30 year round but for summer time, I'd like to give a try at Amsoil HDD 5w30.

What are your tought on that?
Is it a good oil for gasoline engine?

My s-i-l has nearly 200K on her 2004 Corolla on dino.
300K seems easily doable.
What kind of OCI are you doing?

Of course its great oil..but why? Its like putting Mobil 1 Racing oil in an Kia Rio. Pennzoil Platinum would be on the edge of overkill for a Corolla. Pennzoil Conventional and the like would be just right for that car which is super easy on oil.

The Toyota 0W-20 has been back spec'd for you car.
The AZO 0w30 was heavy enough, I don't really see the point in running a heavier oil still.
If you're into Amsoil, their XLZ 0W-20 is probabily the most suitable oil they offer and it's still heavier than what Toyota specifies.

No reason to run an HDD oil whatsoever. Were it my car, I'd be doing yearly OCI's (~15k miles) using a cheap synthetic, unless UOA indicated I could go longer. Using Amsoil, I'd push my luck and try to get 1.5 years or so.

How is the oil consumption? Supposedly they resolved the faulty piston design in your years(small, too few oil return holes that clog over time). I cant run thin, wish i could.

I'm not having a significant oil consumption. 1/4 to 1/2 quart each 12,000 miles. I'd just wanted to give it a shot.

That's amazingly good oil consumption.
BTW, you haven't said why you want to run an unnecessarily heavy oil. Do you just like the look of the bottle?

All engines burn some tiny bit of oil. Otherwise your rings would wear out. Your hardly burning any at all, really good, almost new! 5w30's the spec, so you can run that or go thinner like others suggested.

It's an heavy 30wt ACEA A3/B3 E2 oil with an HTHSV of 3.5cP and 168 VI. Very similar viscosity characteristic to GC 0w30 other than extreme cold.
It's a good diesel oil alternative to the 10w30 grade.

About this 0W20 backspec business. As far as I know, OW20 has been approved in Canada only on many older Toyota's. I have been looking at this for my 2005 Prius, would like to use 0W20, but because Toyota of America has not approved it use yet am holding off.

I would also add the Toyota Canada has retained the OCI at 5,000 miles on the 0W-20 vs 10,000 in the States.
My take on it is that Toyota in the States simply haven't bothered to back spec' as much as Toyota Canada has. Since this isn't a warranty issue but rather what Toyota Canada believes is appropriate based undoubtedly on Toyota Japan recommendations, if it were myself I'd follow Toyota Canada's recommendation of the lighter oil without reservation.

Impressive oil, but not needed unless you are taking advantage of it's extreme long-drain abilities.

I'm always doing 12,000 to 15,000 miles OCI, so yes I'm taking advantage of long drain interval. That is the reason why I'm using Amsoil.

I ran HDD in my Tacoma a few times. Once towing 4K pounds from California to Texas. Not a single drop of oil burned. Great oil but a little overkill. Isn't that what bitog'ers do, overkill.

THE Satrunfans guy, probably one of the most knowledgeable guys about Saturns & their engines, runs Amsoil HDD in his. It rund fantastic and defies the oil burning stigma Saturn has. I'll be switching mine over as soon as my Penn. Ultra is gone.
