Hi all

Which above oil will perform better on a 2.0 Legacy GT under severe driving condition (eg. tropical climate, lots of start stop driving etc)?

Either oil would work for you. Which is easier for you to get?

One thing to consider is that we know the ASL is a group IV oil, the Mobil

If you wanted a group IV oil that's a tad thicker at operating temps, take a look at German Castrol.

Both are great and probably very similar in quality. Oil consumption may be lower with the Amsoil. I don't think it's provable, based on how many people use M1, but it seems consumption is higher in Sub's with M1 then other oils.

Mobil 1 will handle the heat and deposits like a champ though.

I've used the ASL Amsoil with good results.

You just need to decide if it's easier to use the mobil 1 as you dont need to order it.Either way, both good oils to pick from.

Subies do seem to like 40 grade oils, whatever the means. LOL. M1 0w40 or Rotella would be good choices too.

If I recall correctly Soob turbo's beat the tar out of the oil ..but it doesn't seem to mean much in our "can't be counted as wear depending on who/how your reading it" UOA. Don't they have some silly short OCI ..one that thinks Subaru sent you back to 1965?

The compensatory reaction is to go heavier.

The car is manufactured in 2005 with 85,000km (53,000 miles)on the engine. The car is a used one so I'm not sure the OCI by the previous owner. My OCI is likely to be every 10,000km (or 3,000 miles)

Both oils should be avaliable here. Is German Castrol a 40 oil?

My friends who are driving subaru turbocharged cars recommended 40 weight oil too. The reason was that tropical climate should use thicker oil for better protection.

But I was thinking of following the manual recommendation of 5w30 instead.

10,000km is not 3,000 miles... perhaps it was a typo. Even I would run synthetic longer than 3,000 miles and I'm typically very conservative due to my itchy wrenching hand.

Hi, typo error. It should be 6000 miles

Take a more careful look at the owners manual.

10w30, 10w40 and the recommended rating 5w30 was mentioned in the manual.

OK, I suppose I meant read it carefully and completely. My fault for not being clear.

In your first post you describe your usage as severe service. In the owner manual for my '02 WRX with the same engine as yours, it recommends up to 20w50 for severe service. I assume your Legacy manual has similar recommendation.
