Adding Baking Soda to Coffee

I've heard of people adding a tiny pinch of salt to the ground beans prior to brewing/extracting. I've tried it, and personally didn't care for the taste.

Haven't tried baking soda though.
How about a pinch of black pepper? I've heard of people adding that to the beans.

I've always drank my coffee black, no sugar. Can't stand flavored coffees either.

I don't know how/why people consume that bitter nasty stuff in the first place. That you have to put something into it to make it drinkable tells you something right there.
I get it.

You're far too busy manipulating your 30+ bank accounts.

I’ve heard of this as well. A teaspoon is way too much. Just a small pinch for a brew basket is plenty.

Bicarbonate of Soda is an old fashioned remedy for heartburn. If you take a teaspoon and dissolve it in 4-6 ounces of water and drink it the effect is almost immediate. So this idea is not really new. Obviously it’s not something you want to do a lot due to the sodium. Occasional use is fine.

And for the record I drink my coffee black as well.

2 cups every morning, been drinking coffee since I was 5 yrs old, momma would give me a small cup that was probably half coffee and milk, while at sea on board a Navy carrier coffee was your life blood, no telling how many cups I would drink on a 12 hr. shift. :D

My sister sent this video today. It suggests adding baking soda to coffee to neutralize the acids in coffee and make for a smoother drink and less stomach upset. Speaking for myself, I don't have a problem with coffee acidity, but you might. Anyway, here's the video, I'd be interested in comments. I don't recall ever coming across this idea.

My buddy loves coffee but has a weak stomach, went to the doc for acid reflux and the doc told him to do this. He’s been stomach-issues free for about 4 months now, says just a pinch is all it takes per cup, and doesn’t even change the flavor.

Chemistry, I’m almost sorry I was mean to you when I was a student 😉

Everyone has different tastes. For me, if I had to add ANYTHING to my coffee I would ditch it. I appreciate high-quality beans and a strong dark roast to deliver that smooth bitter taste. There is a huge difference between bitter coffee and a higher-end bitter that is smooth. French roast is my go-to but this time of year I get a true bag of Kona (not the mixed bean :poop: ) and oh my, so good. And every spring one of my besties who is Costa Rican who picked beans as a kid; has a relative mail me a pound of the good stuff.

Sorry for the personal attack; I appreciate many of your posts here BUT......IS THAT EVEN COFFEE?

Black Columbian roast, never add sugar, milk or anything. The way it was intended.

To those who adulterate coffee with additives, It’s not bitterness you don’t like, it’s the lack of sweetness so you add it either directly via sugar or via the milk or cream or other crap.

Coffee is pH5 (mildly acidic) while stomach acid is between 1.5 and 3 (highly acidic). What's actually happening is that coffee stimulates stomach acid production to go into overdrive. Is this a property of the acidity in coffee or something else?

They probably use Lucas additives too 😷

Never heard of baking soda but I have heard put a teaspoon or two with the coffee grounds in a drip machine or percolator to help with the acidity and smooth it out.
