But, most people don't push engines very hard for very long, they just drive in a normal (and legal) way down the road, so this is why most American car manufacturers now recommend resource conserving (ILSAC GF-5) oils. In Europe they tend to recommend the Euro standard A3/B4 oil that are higher protection, longer drain oils.
All oils are a balance. It's just a slightly different balance point. Economy and Protection are important to all oil and car companies.
Over here I can get two name brand full synthetic 5W-30 oils. One is ILSAC and the other is A3/B4, and because of that they have a different HTHS (high temperature high shear) viscosity. High performance cars (like Porsche) generally require a higher HTHS (usually 3.5 or above).
M1 5W-30 (ILSAC) HTHS = 3.09
Castrol Edge 5W-30 (A3/B4) = 3.6
Both are great oils, depends on your application.
