Hi, I'm looking for some oil viscosity recommendations for my Honda Gen 1 cr-v (b20 engine) sitting at 240000 Kms. The car's currently running 10w40 that I had laying around, but its time for an oil change and looking what to buy.

Looking at the owner's manual for my temp (anywhere from 15 to touching 40C in melb). 10w40, 15w40/50, 20w40/50 is recommended.

The problem is I can't decide which one to buy for engine longevity, the car's going through the wringer doing upwards of 150 kms everyday in city traffic in 30-40C temps, not sure if it burns oil as it had leaks which I've just fixed and putting new oil now.

Was wondering what you guys are running and what would you recommend I was thinking of 10w50, plus any advice regarding maintenance for this kind of heavy driving would also be appreciated. Cheers.

Actually, the problem is that you believe that one single vis is going to be significantly better for "engine longevity".

Honda lists several lube grades, all of which are appropriate for over 40C (104F). Any of those would be fine. There's no reason to believe that one of those six is somehow going to be the magic potion that is capable of a miracle the other five cannot muster.

If there was one grade that was best, don't you think Honda would state as such and not recommend other four grades?

15w-40 as it's typically the same price or cheaper than 10w-40 but most carry diesel approvals which are better in long drains, deposit control, and protection since there's a minimum after shear hths requirement.

Wow, I knew Honda spec'd thicker oils in other countries but don't recall seeing 20W-50 before !

You have the six recommendations right there in the manual. After that go by what is locally available and at a decent price.

I'm thinking of using that, suits the kind of driving I'm doing

Mate, oil quality matters a ton more than grade. A high end 5w30 will have lower wear than a cheap 20w-50.

I’d run the 10w-40 Restore and Protect myself,
