We may buy this car to flip. It has spark and fuel but just cranks. No codes. The guy said he went to start it up one morning and it wouldn't start. The timing belt is rough looking but it's not broke . It is loose enough I can move it on the camshaft pulleys. I am thinking the belt slipped. But would like some insight and opinions from others. He is asking 450 so the potential is there to make some money with some effort.

Do you flip cars a lot? If not then make sure the interior and exterior are in decent shape. After that you can just make sure it runs around here and get $1,000 around here

Seller knows it's something major. You don't know what it is. I'd go for $250, no more.

I'll give him credit he seems honest. He seemed like he had no idea what he was doing. He said he knew it was getting fuel because there was some in the tank. But it could be major I don't know. Nothing pointed to a very major job but nothing pointed towards being easy either.

Well go look at it and bring some ether to spray down it.

They have those dumb inertia switches in the trunk. It could have been bumped in the night.

Remember there's a rube at every transaction and if you can't spot him, look in the mirror.

A timing belt issue won't sound good turning over.

Well it had fuel at the rail. It also had spark but no cel. It sounded ok when it was cranking no back firing no clanging. Ect. Could it have skipped teeth and just be out of time?

Sometimes you do get pressure at the fuel rail, but for a variety of reasons the injectors will not spray. It could be a failed ECM, fuse, wiring harness, or Ford's annoying CCRM module.

Since the ignition works, there probably aren't any bad grounds, but search for a bad ground anyway.

I can't say I'd pay more than around $500-1000 for a working 98 escort. If you buy it for this much, put $200 worth of parts in, and spend ten hours of your time on it, away from your wife and more importantly, your kids, is it a worthwhile deal?

Are you going to report taxes on your profit?

Well around here I can sell it for 1800 or so. So the profit isn't bad.

If the car is otherwise clean, everything works and the mileage isn't sky high, you could do better than 2 grand here. You're taking a chance, but that's what flips are about.

I would show up with a tow vehicle, wave $300 in the guy's face and take a shot at it.
