pcv system caused that.used to see tbi engines with the baseplate passages plugged up on the tbi.no vacuum.
they would look like that under the covers.
you could also try LC20 its an oil additive that has sludge busting properties. esters I believe. I haven't used it lately but still have some in a jug.
